Located at Camp Southern Ground in Fayetteville, Georgia, USA, the evocatively named Space Crab designed by Jefferson Browne Greham Architects is a treehouse that has been designed to cater for children of all abilities with a special emphasis on those with neurodevelopmental disorders as well as social or emotional challenges. The treehouse earned its name from a resemblance to a horse-shoe crab with a curved body formed to fit within an existing grove of trees and a long tail which forms a 200-foot-long accessible ramp.
The design brief from was to create a building with a projected life of over 100 years. This criterion lead to the use of a steel structure, metal cladding and PVC decking material to create a sturdy and durable structure.
elZinc Slate from MetalTecch USA was used for the external cladding of the Space Crab and was selected for its properties as a ‘living material’. When exposed to the elements, zinc naturally develops a thin protective layer referred to as patina. The patina creates resistance to the weathering and corrosion processes that many other metals are subject to.
