Located in Erkelenz, Germany, Kirche Erkelenz was designed by Architekturbüro Klomp and completed in 2015. This new church was built to replace the 19th-century Immerath church as part of the relocation of the entire town of Erkelenz to make way for an open cut mine.
The new church has been designed and built to exemplify best-practice environmental sustainability principles and is the first house in Germany to be built according to the passive house standard. Central to this vision was the design for natural daylighting and ventilation. A passageway connects the main volume of the chapel with meeting rooms and the sacristy. The architects chose 30 VELUX modular skylights to be installed along the length of this corridor to admit natural daylight and fresh air. The skylights are fitted with blinds to avoid overheating and glare while still admitting abundant light into the building interiors. The installation of the 30 skylight modules was completed within three days.

Longlights are bands of VELUX Modular Skylights, pre-fitted with installation brackets and clamps that guarantee a fast and secure installation. The prefabricated aluminum flashing guarantees a perfect fit that makes it 100% waterproof. Longlight allows for configurations with a pitch of 5 to 30°.
About Wall-Mounted Longlight 5-40°
Wall-mounted Longlights are a series of modular skylights mounted against a vertical wall. This opens up a new range of design possibilities where the expression is not limited by the placement of the skylight.
Each roof glazing solution is delivered with a special prefabricated flashing ensuring a perfect fit and 100% water tightness. As the skylight modules are supplied with installation brackets and clamps, fast and secure installation is guaranteed. The flashing allows for configurations with a pitch of 5° and 40°. Wall-mounted longlights are mounted on a standard steel profile of 100mm width at the wall.
