At the junction of Lakanal, Mademoiselle and Croix Nivert streets in Paris fifteenth arrondissement, a new flagship building by Nakache Orihuela Architects studio is clad in Corian® Glacier White.
One of the main challenges of the project was the integration of this new building in a heterogeneous background, for the construction of 10 multi-unit social housing and two stores. The client, Elogie-Siemp wanted the building to achieve a combination of aesthetics, functionality and energy efficiency first of all but equally importantly, that the overall construction should improve the tenants’ quality of life.
The 5-story building is contiguous to Mademoiselle and Lakanal streets buildings. Its tapered lines with rounded edges look as if they were carved by the urban traffic. The building was not easy to realize due to its shape and look. The sloping part, the rounded edges together with the holes on the roofing and façade envelope in Corian® Glacier White were fabricated by CREA Diffusion, Corian® Quality Network Industrial Partner.
The exterior spaces of the apartments hollowed out in the construction are protected by trellised panels in Corian® with variable perforations, allowing the sunlight to pass through and offering the pleasure of being hidden whilst outside. They form an additional buffer space on the crossroads and offer sun protection to the hottest facades. The loggias walls and underside ceiling are clad with golden colored aluminum that illuminates interiors by reflecting the sparkling sunlight. The global construction volume lies on a glazed base at street level which houses shops and common areas.
The Corian® Glacier White façade envelops and protects the construction while different sized bay windows are applied according to the view orientations and the sunshine. Besides the iceberg effect given by the color, Corian® was chosen by the architects for its design freedom and surface versatility with varying transparencies degrees and for its durability, easy maintenance, and cleaning.
About 800 square meters of Corian® were fabricated for the sunscreen panels on the facade and as big vertical thermoformed panels for the paneled roofing and edges. The details quality of Corian®, its seamless, sleek and homogeneous look contributes to the architectural language of the building.
