Located at the heart of the Commonwealth Games Athletes Village 2018, the Parklands Disk is the focal point of the village. It was inspired by the Natural Arch waterfall, a local ecological gem in the Springbrook National Park. The cladding of the disc was done by ShapeShell.

During the games, Parklands will accommodate 6,500 athletes and officials. Afterward, it will become both a mixed-use community and a “health and knowledge precinct” involving Griffith University and Gold Coast University Hospital. The Parklands Disk needed to be suitable for both situations.
Designing simultaneously for an individual event and a permanent legacy was a complex task. An interpretation of the city was important as was its abstraction and representation through color, sculpture, and landscape.
The disk is built like an aircraft wing clad with ShapeShell, sitting 25m in diameter and cantilevering 15m from the last support. The disc was fitted out with LED lighting and aquatics to create a waterfall through the central oculus, which creates a serene atmosphere during both night and day. Style lines were built integral to the complex geometry to accentuate the unique aerodynamics of the disc.
