USG Ceiling Plus' Partí collection offers custom parametric perforation designs which is non-uniform and non-repeating. ​Holes with multiple shapes and sizes combine to create a distinctive, cohesive pattern design across a system of unique panels.

Parametric design
Is a process based on algorithmic thinking that enables the expression of parameters and rules that, together, define, encode and clarify the relationship between design intent and design response. The Parametric Design series presents a variety of products: Flow, AR-Wall, CP-Wall, Delaunay, Basketball, Randomness, Dome, Folding, Aerodynamics and Veil. Each present a different concept behind their design achieved through various development processes.

Flow

Concept
The design was made for IIDA made local. This example is an exploration of several studies:

  • Vectors and Vector Fields in Grasshopper 3d in order to create a dynamic geometry
  • Introducing the new perforation types – long slots, which help to maintain directionality of vector pattern.
  • Testing out the density and uncontrollable overlaps of punches.

Development:

  • Normalized pattern prepared for fabrication.
  • The length of a perf can increase up to 2.9″.

AR-Wall

Concept
The design was made for Architectural Record Innovation Show in San Francisco. This example is an exploration of several studies:

  • Vectors and Vector Fields in Grasshopper 3d in order to create a dynamic geometry
  • Introducing the new perforation types: long slots, which help to maintain directionality of vector pattern.
  • Testing the density and uncontrollable overlaps of punches.

Development:

  • Normalized pattern prepared for fabrication.
  • The length of a perf can be increased up to 2.9″.

CP-Wall

Concept
The pattern was made for the USG Ceilings Plus lobby. Work in progress.

Development:

  • Normalized pattern prepared for fabrication.
  • Using obround perfs.

Delaunay

Concept: Volumetric Flatness
A concept using perforations of different sizes and density to create a 3D effect on a flat surface. The patterning technique is inspired by natural systems. The animation shows the possibilities of manipulations with parametric pattern.

Development:

  • Normalized pattern prepared for fabrication.
  • The radii can be up to 4″, which means the cut-outs can be bigger.

Basketball

Concept: Volumetric Flatness
A patterning concept using perforations of different sizes and density to create 3-dimensional effects on a flat surface. Inspiration for this pattern was the image, which is the sequence of slow-motion photographs of basketball player. The possible trajectory of the ball in player’s hands was traced and used as the path for the pattern definition.

As the project was designed parametrically, this simple pattern could be adapted, by moving geometry and changing the parameters of the code, such as the radius, fallout, size of grid and ect.

Development:

  • Inspiration from a basketball trajectory.
  • Integrate to basketball court.

Randomness

Concept: Organized Randomness
The assignment was to create a starry-night-looking ceiling. We used the image of the Milky Way. The goal was to minimize the number of panel, keeping the look of complete randomness. 16 patterns of different densities were developed in order to reduce the number of custom panels. The patterns applied randomly according to the density number. In addition, the rotation was applied to the similar patterns in order to enhance the effect of irregularity.

Development:

  • Random distribution of “stars” on the “sky”.
  • Different densities to replicate the Milky Way pattern.
  • Adjusting the density.
  • Applying modular panels.

Dome

Concept:

Using parametric logic to apply pattern to a curved surface. Break up the dome structure into 579 panels (48 panels in 12 groups). Linear perforations can create different patterns, such as star, loop and others.

Development:

  • Calculated the size of each panels.
  • Used linear perforation to create star panel.

Folding

Concept: Biogen Conference Room
Undulated surface or panel compounded by same sized triangle panel. The Grasshopper script developed by Partí team able to maintain the flexibility to coordinate with ceiling projectors, LED light, HVAC system. All building systems become part of the design elements.

  • Scripting the whole ceiling by triangulated system.
  • Push and pull control vertices to create undulated surface.
  • Further develop a ID system to location connection points location and height.
  • Building systems integration.

Aerodynamics

Concept:
This project was inspired by aerodynamic and uses

Partí perforations to create unique patterns and indexing of custom shapes to create a fluid free flowing motion.

Perforations are not limited by standard tools such as circles and squares any more, Partí normalization progress leads to new dimension in parametric panel design.

Development:

  • Explicit control and unique indexing of linear shapes create a fluid motion unachievable with a radial shape.
  • Requirements for lighting fixtures and MEP systems influenced perforation sizes and direction.

Veil

Concept:
This project is inspired by fabrics texture and uses perforation create veil-like motion pattern. Each pattern uses LED light to create a luminous ceiling.

Development:

  • Explicit control and unique indexing of linear shapes creates a fluid motion unachievable with a radial shape.
  • Lighting fixtures and MEP systems influenced perforation sizes and direction.
