Accoya® is a modified wood produced through a patented acetylation process that alters the cell structure of sustainably sourced timber to improve its durability, dimensional stability, and moisture resistance. Accoya® wood was selected for multiple exterior applications at a residential project in West Vancouver, Canada, designed by McLeod Bovell Modern Houses.
Accoya® was used for the siding, fencing, soffits, railings, and handrails throughout the property. A custom Accoya® handrail was also developed by Upper Canada Forest Products specifically for the project. The use of the same timber across these different applications establishes material continuity between the building envelope and exterior architectural elements.
Designed by Matt McLeod and Lisa Bovell, the residence combines irregular volumes and exposed concrete with timber surfaces. Accoya® was left with a rough-sawn finish, retaining the visible grain and texture of the wood and providing a material contrast with the concrete surfaces. Its durability and dimensional stability support its use across the project's exposed exterior applications.
