Schenker Storen develops shading solutions that combine architectural integration with functional performance. Schenker Storen developed custom-made aluminium shutters for the renovation of the Saint-Maur care home in Toulon, adapting the solution to the building's historic character and the needs of its residents. The new shutters were designed to reproduce the original elements while improving ease of use, ventilation, light control, and resistance to weathering.
Located in the Valbourdin district of southern France, the care home occupies a historic building with around 9,500 square metres of living space and more than 200 windows and French doors. Many of the existing shutters had deteriorated and required replacing while preserving the appearance of the listed façade. New lightweight aluminium shutters from Schenker Storen were selected as an alternative to heavy wooden blinds, allowing residents to operate them more easily while providing protection from summer heat and enabling natural ventilation.
Each shutter was manufactured to match its individual opening, including arched windows and other special formats. The original hinges were retained, while the slats were adapted to the corresponding curves. Functional details include a rotating catch for ventilation and an easy-to-use handle, with all shutters, fittings, and hinges finished in RAL 6019.
The installation was carried out from inside the building using patented technology, allowing the shutters to be fitted with millimetre accuracy without requiring a lifting platform or affecting the listed façade. Work was coordinated around the residents' daily activities, with the renovation planned in stages over three years to allow the care home to remain in operation.
