Characteristics
Versatile, durable, discreet installation, custom-built system
Schenker Storen develops shading solutions that combine architectural integration with functional performance. Located by the Caumasee Lake in Flims, Switzerland, this new timber restaurant was designed to blend into the Alpine landscape. To support year-round operation, the project uses a custom Schenker Storen retractable fabric blind with a counter-tension system, providing discreet shading and wind stability in the exposed setting.
The restaurant is designed around the relationship between the building, lake, forest, and rocky landscape. Folding and sliding blinds from Schenker Storen in the façade create a flexible transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing the building to adapt to seasonal use and changing weather conditions.

For the shading system, a frictionless cable system with slim guide elements was selected to maintain the building's architectural expression. The system was installed onto a custom-built substructure provided by the client, with dimensions adapted to the blind. A wind-stable fabric with a premium “Elements Solids” acrylic fibre covering was used to withstand the conditions at approximately 1,000 metres above sea level.
The counter-tension mechanism keeps the fabric taut in different positions through a pre-tensioned spring barrel, allowing the blind to be installed horizontally, vertically, or at an angle. This type of configuration is particularly suited to exposed buildings with large glazed surfaces where wind stability and a consistently taut fabric are required.
