FIBRAN is a Greek group dedicated to the production of insulation and building materials. Among its solutions for the building envelope, the company offers a set of applications for the insulation of basements, addressing the walls and floors that place these spaces in direct contact with the ground.
Basement walls and floors belong to the external envelope of a building. The growing demand for energy savings, together with increasingly strict building regulations, has made the thermal insulation of below-grade spaces a necessity. When basement walls remain uninsulated, the temperature difference between the wall surface and the interior air produces water vapor condensation, creating an indoor climate unsuitable for habitation and other uses.
By insulating externally, the thermal mass of the basement wall is put to use for the benefit of the interior space, while the insulation layer simultaneously protects the waterproofing membrane from damage during backfilling operations.
Applications
The solutions cover the external insulation of basement floors in two foundation configurations: basement floor insulation over a general raft foundation, and basement floor insulation over a footing-beam grid. In both cases, the insulation is placed on the external side, below the structural slab.
