Occhio develops holistic lighting solutions for architecture and interior design. Luminaires from Occhio were used in Cugó Gran Vittoriosa, a luxury hotel in Vittoriosa (Birgu), Malta.
Cugó Gran Vittoriosa occupies a historic building within the fortified walls of Vittoriosa, one of Malta's Three Cities. The project, completed in 2026, converts the building into a luxury hotel and was designed by Große Halbuer Architects. The design retains the building's original stone structure, arches, and vaulted spaces, with new lighting and interior elements integrated into the existing architecture.
In the reception area, a cluster of Sento sospeso is suspended from the glass dome, Sento verticale is installed along the stairway, and Sento letto is positioned to follow the line of the building's arches.
Sento sospeso and Sento verticale are also used through the corridors and staircases, with brightness and light intensity varied at key junctions to mark direction. A Luna parete is installed at each guest room door.
In the hotel bar, an enclosed space without direct natural light, Coro moon sospeso is mounted above the counter along its horizontal axis, and io pico is installed in a niche behind the bar. In the triplex rooms and suites, Mito sospeso pendants are arranged across three levels, and Gioia lettura is used as a reading light.
In the wellness area, io verticale provides vertical illumination, Mito aura is ceiling-mounted. It combines direct and indirect light, Mito sfera is used as a mirror luminaire, and io giro spotlights provide accent lighting. The luminaires throughout the project were specified in matte black and matte gold finishes.
