Digital Monolith in Traunstein District Office | ASB

ASB GlassFloor is a specialist in LED glass surfaces and digital flooring systems, developing immersive architectural solutions that transform spaces into interactive, media-driven environments. The Digital Monolith from ASB GlassFloor was installed in front of the Traunstein district office, located in Traunstein, Germany.

The Traunstein district office serves as the civic heart of the Traunstein municipality in Bavaria. The project was conceived as a public art installation that would reimagine the building's forecourt as a space for cultural expression and digital innovation. Inspired by Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, the work was initiated by artist and entrepreneur Christof Babinsky, whose company ASB GlassFloor is recognized internationally for landmark LED glass projects for clients including FC Bayern Munich, Microsoft, and the Venice Biennale. The installation raises questions about the origins of human creativity and the role of innovation in public life, positioning Traunstein as a city willing to engage with the future of urban space.

Standing 4.5 meters tall and 2 meters wide, the Digital Monolith is a double-sided LED glass structure featuring more than 2.25 million LEDs per side, delivering high-resolution visuals behind impact- and scratch-resistant glass. The surface is primarily dedicated to artistic content, showcasing works by regional and international artists, while also serving as a communication platform for the city to display public information. The installation demonstrates the broader potential of LED glass technology in urban contexts: as a cultural display, a civic information medium, or an interactive storytelling platform for hotels, museums, universities, and corporate spaces alike.
