Characteristics
Folded steel plate or cast concrete construction, Monolithic structural form, Seamless weld and grind finish, Powder coat, patina or polished surface options, Self-supporting structural geometry, Custom rise and tread geometry per project
The zig zag staircase — sometimes called a folded-plate or kink staircase — derives its structural logic from origami: a continuous folded surface that alternates direction with each tread-riser unit, generating both structural depth and a bold geometric rhythm that no conventional stair can replicate. Siller Treppen's zig zag stair systems are conceived as monolithic structural objects, fabricated from folded steel plate or cast concrete, in which the fold itself is the load-bearing mechanism and the aesthetic statement simultaneously.
In steel, the zig zag stair is welded from precisely cut and bent plate elements, ground to seamless continuity at each fold line, and finished in powder coating, hot-rolled patina, or polished surfaces depending on the design intent. In concrete, precast or in-situ construction allows the same geometric logic to be expressed in a heavier, more tactile material vocabulary. In both cases, the result is a staircase of striking visual power — one that reads differently from every angle and casts dramatic shadows as light conditions change throughout the day.
Zig zag staircases are specified by architects seeking a feature staircase that communicates structural ingenuity alongside formal boldness. They are particularly well-suited to industrial-aesthetic lofts, brutalist-influenced residential projects, contemporary art spaces, and any interior where the staircase is intended to read as an object of design as much as a functional element.
