Custom EHRET folding sliding shutters were used in the Kesselhaus project, the revitalization and extension of a historic former boiler house in Leverkusen-Opladen, Germany, designed by oxen architekten.
The project integrates 228 Matrico folding sliding shutters with SL 12 profile system and expanded metal infill, powder-coated in a rust-patina brown finish, to provide adaptable sun shading and become a defining façade element while blending heritage and contemporary design.

The Kesselhaus in Leverkusen is a former brick boiler building originally constructed in 1948 and part of the urban redevelopment of the Neue Bahnstadt Opladen area. The design retained the historic brick envelope while adding a new four-storey extension, merging preservation with modern architecture. EHRET’s folding sliding shutter system contributes to this transformation by adding kinetic façade components that articulate light, shadow, and rhythm across the façade surface.

EHRET supplied a total of 228 folding sliding shutter panels from its standard catalogue, configured with MATRICO expanded metal infill and SL 12 profiles. These shutters open to 90° relative to the façade and close flush with the building envelope, delivering sun shading, visual dynamism, and façade depth. The patina brown powder coating was selected to match the adjacent Corten steel surfaces, creating a coherent material palette that is nearly indistinguishable from real oxidation. In this project, EHRET folding sliding shutters perform both functional sun protection and contribute as a strong architectural element that enhances the rehabilitated historic structure.
