Custom EHRET sliding shutters with aluminum foam infill were installed at the Materialise Technology Park Bremen, a 3 500 m² technology centre for additive manufacturing in Bremen, Germany.
This project leverages a pioneering sun-protection system featuring uniquely thin aluminum foam panels that produce distinct lighting effects and provide sun shading, thermal comfort, and façade articulation.
The Materialise Technology Park Bremen reflects the ethos of innovation and cutting-edge research. The facility, designed by Johannes Schneider Architekten BDA, includes a four-storey office wing, a two-storey hall, and an intermediate structure with a roof terrace. The building’s façade is clad in large-format aluminum panels and incorporates a novel sun-protection system with specially engineered aluminum foam infills.
Product in Use
A total of 228 custom EHRET sliding shutter panels were installed on the façades — 85 of which are electrically operated, 96 manually movable, and 47 fixed as architectural design elements. These panels feature ultra-thin infill plates made from refined aluminum foam that is light, thermally insulating, and sound-absorbing. Each panel’s organic cell structure delivers excellent sun and glare protection, varying translucency, and dramatic light effects on the façade, while the lightweight RAL 9007 grey-aluminum frames provide contemporary aesthetic clarity.
