Custom Skylights in North London Home | Glazing Vision

Glazing Vision is a manufacturer of architectural glass skylights engineered to enhance spaces through natural light and minimalist design. Sliding Over Fixed Skylights and Free Standing Skybox Skylights from Glazing Vision were used in a contemporary orangery extension and top floor roof dormer project, located in North London, United Kingdom, transforming a family home with expansive daylight and flexible indoor‑outdoor living areas.

The project involved a comprehensive extension to the rear of a North London residence, designed by Chris Dyson Architects. The aim was to unite previously fragmented ground floor spaces into a flowing, versatile living area that could be enjoyed year‑round. Drawing on the calm, understated architectural language characteristic of the practice, the orangery extension was conceived as a robust yet elegant structure with traditional proportions expressed through precast stone columns and large glazed openings linking to a raised terrace and garden beyond.

A key architectural focus was achieving a seamless blend of form and function. The design not only broadened the footprint of the home but also introduced a striking spatial sequence that promotes fluid movement between formal dining, kitchen, and outdoor entertaining zones. The extension’s insulated walls and high‑performance double glazing ensure thermal comfort across seasons, while the integration of bespoke skylights plays a vital role in regulating internal temperatures and amplifying natural daylight.

To realize these goals, Glazing Vision engineered a special Dual Sliding Over Fixed skylight for the orangery roof. Comprising eight sections, with two end sections sliding over six fixed central panels, the skylight spans the exceptional width of the extension, providing generous sky views and an open, airy atmosphere. The electronically controlled sliding elements offer smooth, quiet operation and include a manual override for reliability. This skylight not only enhances daylight but also supports natural ventilation when retracted, reinforcing the indoor‑outdoor connection.

On the top floor, where a narrow hallway once limited light and views, a custom glazed dormer was introduced. Here, a Bi‑parting 1‑wall Box Skylight with six sections was installed into the sloped roof, with two central panels sliding over adjacent fixed sections. Finished with satin etched glass on end panels for privacy and planning compliance, the skylight creates an almost balcony‑like opening to the garden vista, inviting fresh air and abundant daylight into the newly formed relaxation space.

The collaboration between architect and manufacturer resulted in a harmonious blend of architectural intent and technical precision. The Glazing Vision skylights not only flood key spaces with natural light but also provide practical access, thermal performance, and enhanced spatial experience, ensuring that both the orangery and top floor additions enrich the home’s everyday life.
