Lunawood is a pioneer in decorative wood solutions, with 25 years of expertise in the thermal modification of wood. Their mission is to reconnect people with nature by bringing the calming essence of the forest into urban environments.
Lunawood ThermoWood® cladding, decking, and interior panel systems were applied in Project Ö, a private island retreat designed by architects Aleksi Hautamäki and Milla Selkimäki and located on Skjulskäret in the Finnish archipelago.
Completed in 2019, the project consists of two compact cabins developed as a self-initiated design and construction effort by the owners, who spent several years identifying a suitable site for a remote residential environment. The project has received international recognition, including the Green Good Design Award 2021 in the category of Green Architecture.
For the building envelope, outdoor terraces, and interior finishes, the architects specified a range of thermally modified wood profiles, including Luna Panel System 19 × 68, 19 × 117, and 19 × 140 for façade cladding, Luna SHP Profix 3 40 × 185 for exterior decking, and additional interior and structural elements such as Luna SHP 26 × 92, Luna HLL/L 26 × 118, and Luna TGV 17 × 188. These components were selected to provide consistent material performance across exterior and interior applications while maintaining a cohesive architectural expression throughout the development.
The architectural concept is defined by long, narrow building forms that maximize views toward the surrounding landscape while accommodating essential residential functions within a limited footprint. The combined floor area of the two buildings totals approximately 70 m², requiring careful spatial planning to ensure functionality, comfort, and efficient use of space.
Large window openings and continuous wood surfaces reinforce the relationship between the buildings and their natural setting, while the vertical cladding system supports the clean, minimal geometry of the structures.
Material selection was guided by the need for durability in a coastal climate characterized by wind, moisture, and seasonal temperature variation. Lunawood ThermoWood® was specified to provide dimensional stability and resistance to decay without the use of chemical treatments, enabling reliable long-term performance in exposed conditions. Through the integration of façade, decking, and interior systems within a unified material strategy, the project demonstrates how compact residential architecture can respond to demanding environmental conditions while maintaining clarity of design and construction efficiency.
