Abstract:

Cotton is a water-intensive plant, requiring around 15000 liters of water per kilogram. It also needs substantial sunlight and pesticides. Historically, cotton grew wild with various colors and species. Once discovered by humans, it became domesticated and industrialized for large-scale production. Cotton seeds naturally dispersed through water and wind, but selective breeding for whiteness has shortened their hairs, impairing this process.

Egyptian Cotton™, known for its long and strong fibers, is now rare, and Egypt imports cotton. Modern cotton struggles to spread its seeds naturally.

We investigated organic farming, finding a farm using natural methods. We selected 20 wild cotton varieties for our garden, capable of maintaining a healthy farm by controlling pests, strengthening genetics, and being drought-resistant.

Egypt's climate is ideal for cotton. However, urbanization is reducing agricultural land, pushing cultivation into the desert. Our project aims to influence desert land, using machinery to create an artificial palace for cotton.

We examined the relationship between cotton and urban development in Cairo. Housing expansion follows water channels, so we proposed using wind to spread cotton seeds, preserving agricultural land and controlling urbanization.

The garden can be accessed from the city, utilizing existing irrigation. Walls are designed to allow wind flow, dispersing seeds. Plants are arranged to control pests, provide privacy, and regulate the landscape.
