Abstract:

Stratus Quo is a project that brings new life to the forgotten Viaduct of the Fifteen Eyes in Madrid’s Ciudad Universitaria. Originally designed by Eduardo Torroja in the 1930s, the viaduct once connected key areas across the Cantarranas ravine but over time, it was buried, its arches closed off, and it disappeared from view.

This project sees the viaduct as a layered historical structure and builds upon it instead of replacing it. By adding new architectural and social functions, it reactivates the site and reconnects it to the city.

At the heart of the proposal is MAD VALLEY, a flexible space for innovation, learning, and collaboration—turning the viaduct into a hub between university faculties.

Lightweight wooden trusses rest on the original structure, supporting new utilities and interactive elements that respond to movement. The landscape design recalls the old ravine with native plants, wooden seating, and walkable paths, creating a welcoming microclimate under the arches.
