Abstract:

Sanctuary of Silence is a contemplative sanctuary situated on the mire of Tomåsan in Nesodden, Norway. The project explores how architecture can open sacred space to people of all faiths & backgrounds within a secular society by framing experience rather than prescribing belief. In a time when spirituality is increasingly commodified & accelerated, the project resists visibility & consumption, proposing instead an architecture of withdrawal, slowness, and attentive presence. The sanctuary is reached through a gradual pilgrimage across forest and marsh, where paths, gateways, and bridges create a transition from everyday life toward stillness. Architecture begins not with the building, but with arrival. At the heart of the site, on an ynys, the sanctuary hovers lightly above the mire, preserving the fragile ecosystem while foregrounding its dualities: rock & water, stability & uncertainty, density & openness.Rooted in stave churches & informed by contemporary sacred architecture, the structure is restrained yet expressive. A cantilevered timber frame anchored into bedrock supports a porous wooden façade that filters light like the surrounding forest. An oculus opens the interior to sky, weather, and time, allowing nature to shape the spatial experience.

Material honesty is definitive. Pine treated with tar distilled on site is allowed to age & darken alongside the landscape. The interior remains intentionally empty, offering room for meditation, rest, or silent prayer.
