Abstract:

"For All Generation" transforms an underused commercial building through the "Postcode 3000" approach, adapting it into a residential and public space that supports multi‑generational families—an often overlooked demographic in today’s housing market. The project provides a range of home sizes and family‑oriented amenities that support coexistence among households of different ages. The building is organized into five key zones being public library, Cluster 1 housing, Cluster 2 housing, shared amenities, and a rooftop garden, each tailored to diverse family structures. Cluster 1 supports smaller households, while Cluster 2 accommodates larger families, with all units arranged over two levels to create double‑height spaces and a sense of openness. Amenities such as gyms, gaming rooms, gardens, and communal barbecue areas encourage social interaction and strengthen bonds between households. A two‑storey public library anchors the ground floor, offering inclusive spaces for all ages. The facade extends the floor plates to provide private outdoor areas for every bedroom, supporting psychological well‑being, particularly for elderly residents. Timber elements soften the original concrete‑and‑glass structure, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. By combining adaptive reuse with inclusive design, the building offers a model for future urban living, one where families of all sizes can thrive together in the heart of Melbourne.
