Abstract:
The proposal transforms Level 01 of the Squarehouse at UNSW into an interior forest, creating an inclusive educational space inspired by environmental psychology and biophilic design. Located along the main east-west pedestrian pathway connecting the Anzac Parade Light Rail station to campus facilities, the Squarehouse serves as both a thoroughfare and a destination.
The design features a timber canopy and branching pathways to facilitate movement and clarity while accommodating heavy foot traffic. Nature elements are integrated through warm wooden structures, layered planting, filtered light, and sound-absorbing materials to enhance comfort. Flexible pods and versatile spaces support various learning preferences, promote collaboration, and provide quiet reflection areas.
This inclusive, and sustainable intervention balances environmental consciousness with long-term significance, fostering a serene and stimulating interior landscape that enhances wellbeing and supports meaningful learning experiences.
