The AIA is hosting its first ever design competition on Facebook—the AIA Facebook Young Designers Challenge. The competition is targeting emerging professionals, and is open to all AIAS members, all Assoc. AIA members, and all AIA young architect members. (The AIA defines young architects as being licensed 10 years or less.)
The purpose of the competition is establish a schematic design for developing the Gadeokdo region in Busan Metropolitan city, Republic of Korea, as an international compound zone by obtaining the broad ideas of experts at home and abroad.

Designed for the “44th Zagreb Salon”, an architecture show in Croatia, the pavilion designed by njiric + arhitekti (featured on ArchDaily) is currently on sale on eBay.
Russia will decorate its pavilion for the 2010 World Expo like a fairy-tale world, showing a comfortable city as seen through children’s eyes. The country unveiled its pavilion design which will be on a 6,000-square-meter plot and feature 12 white towers inspired by traditional Russian women’s costume.
The 20-meter towers, in white, red and gold, will duplicate the ancient Ural towns dating back 3,000 years ago, but given a modern touch with their irregular shapes. They demonstrate the diversity of both ancient and modern cities, said Vladimir Strashko, Russia’s commission general for the Expo.
A 15-meter-tall central building will link the towers. More images after the break.
This year, Hometta’s celebrating by offering all their friends and members free downloadable plans for the hippest gingerbread house on the block. This DIY house is a small-scale version of the Draft House by Hometta’s own, award-winning HouMinn Practice.

Architecture for Humanity is a a charitable organization that seeks architectural solutions to humanitarian crises and brings professional design services to communities in need. They do an amazing job all over the world and this has been an incredible year for them, specially for their Skatepark in Afghanistan.

Couple of weeks ago we launched a competition through our Facebook Fan Page to find the best architectural animation video you could send us. After looking at 34 videos and receiving more than 2,500 votes, we have a winner!
Armir Shapllo, with his Space Camp Nou video (see it after the break), received more than 800 votes to win a brand new iPod Touch. Matej Štefanac came second and Alex Roman third. Our AD Futures #1, ICE, an international office based in Hong Kong shared with us their proposal for the Taipei Pop Music Center competition.
Pop culture is the culture of change. Pop architecture is the space of change. Rather than a building, the TPMC provides a platform for spontaneous activities: a street, a park, a network of pedestrian circulation, which are embedded into an architectural framework. The design strategy for the TPMC defines the site through 3 different elements.

ICE – Ideas for Contemporary Environments, became our first AD Futures ever. They have just shared with us DK2, a luxury service apartments project in Hanoi, Vietnam for which they won 3rd prize in an invited competition.
The project is located next to the West Lake in Hanoi. The competition was requesting to create a residential iconic tower of 65 floors. As the project would be naturally dominant in a city of rather low scale, it focussed less on the design of the form of the building, but rather on the quality of the units within to create a user based experience.

The Southern California Institute of Architecture is pleased to present Eric Owen Moss, director of SCI-Arc, in conversation with Frances Anderton, host of DnA: Design and Architecture on 89.9 KCRW and Los Angeles editor of Dwell Magazine. Open Up is a workshop focused on the development of projects for the digital façade in Medialab-Prado’s building. This call is meant for project proposals to be collaboratively developed during the workshop-seminar taking place in Madrid from February 9 through 23, 2010.

Climate: Design, written for designers, architects, planners, policymakers, and academics alike, explores the current paradigm shift and illustrates how new thinking can convert investments in urban infrastructure, land use, and development into resilient and enduring support systems for human and environmental prosperity.

The Sustainability Centre Foundation, the Delft University of Technology and the Cartesius Institute initiated the international public ideas competition for the World Sustainability Centre Afsluitdijk. The findings of this competition will lead to recommendations on the future of the Afsluitdijk that will be presented to the Vice Minister in the spring of 2010.
The prize giving ceremony took place on November 27th. After a short program Margreeth de Boer, chairwoman of the jury, presented the assessment of the jury and unveiled the winning designs. A total of 80 parties submitted for this competition. KOW is one of the two first prize winners with their design ‘BiLinear’.
