Copenhagen Architecture Festival

Copenhagen Architecture Festival (CAFx) was founded in 2014 and aims to rethink the presentation of architecture, highlighting its qualities and diversity, and create a relevant discussion about how it affects - and is affected by - our way of being in this world. CAFx is a platform to discuss and display ideas within the architectural world through a public program of talks, film, performances, workshops, seminars and exhibitions in collaboration with different partners primarily in Copenhagen but also in the cities of Aarhus and Aalborg.

Architect’ 16: “ASA Back to Basic”

The Architect’ 16: “ASA Back to Basic” expo aims to introduce identity and excellence in design for Thai architects, and will feature achievements in architecture, innovation and technology. In addition the expo will have international seminars and services for members and the general public, including displays of materials and products related to architecture, interior design and construction.

Talk & Book Signing: Smart Economic Development through Enterprise Pollinators

Should urban economic development continue to “attract and retain” nonlocal business? Absolutely not, argues economist and attorney Michael Shuman in his latest book, The Local Economy Solution (Chelsea Green, 2015). Instead, cities should spread self-financing “pollinator” enterprises that nurture locally owned businesses through local planning, entrepreneurship, partnerships, purchasing, and investment. Dallas Architecture Forum Presents Iñaki Ábalos + Renata Sentkiewicz

Dallas Architecture Forum, a non-profit organization for everyone interested in learning about and improving the architecture, design, landscape and urban fabric of the North Texas region is pleased to continue its 2015-16 Lecture Season with outstanding architect Iñaki Ábalos, Chair of the Department of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and Co-Founder and Partner of Abalos+Sentkiewicz Arquitectos in Boston and Madrid, with Renata Sentkiewicz,Co-Founder and Partner at A + S and Design Critic at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Their projects and built work are internationally recognized and have been the subject of 15 individual exhibitions and many collective exhibitions in the most prestigious centers in London, Paris, New York and Venice.

CanstructionLA 2016

For a decade, Los Angeles architects, designers, builders, and engineers have joined forces to create innovative structures meant for feeding, not housing. They will again design large-scale structures made entirely of canned foods for the 10th Annual CanstructionLA design/build competition to benefit the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. CanstructionLA has donated more than 300,000 cans of food to help feed people since 2006.

On Saturday, February 27th, Storefront for Art and Architecture and The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union will jointly present a public conference, Closed World: Encounters That Never Happened. Presenters and discussants will engage in debate and discussion and the history and future of closed systems in architecture and design. 
The format of this conference invites participants to impersonate a historical figures who have been major contributors to the discourse of closed systems. Figures include Reyner Banham, Buckminster Fuller, Hans Hollein, Neil Armstrong, Jacques Cousteau, and Walt Disney, among others.

Asia Pacific Architecture Forum

Australia to host landmark gathering of architects from Asia Pacific. As the Asia Pacific experiences unprecedented urban growth, architects will play a critical role in shaping the future of cities across the region. The diversity of its people and countries will be explored in the Asia Pacific Architecture Forum, taking place in Brisbane from 1 to 14 March 2016.

Tour: United States Coast Guard Headquarters

Tour the new U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters on the west campus of historic St. Elizabeths, featuring an 11-story office building providing nearly 1.2 million square feet of office and support space for 3,860 employees, a separate central utility plant, and two seven-story parking garages. The building, designed by Perkins + Will, Andropogon Associates, and HOK, keeps a low profile on the historic campus while scoring high on design aesthetic, user experience, and client-mandated requirements. The building is LEED(r) Gold certified.

International Dialogues: Reiner de Graaf and Henk Ovink

Henk Ovink has transformed the way communities affected by continuing threats of flooding respond to change and how architects and city planners rebuilt their cities after flooding disasters. Both Henk Ovink and OMA are involved in the post-Hurricane Sandy rebuild in the United States through the ‘Rebuild by Design’ competition. In this event Reinier de Graaf (Partner at OMA) and Henk Ovink (Special Envoy for International Water Affairs for the Kingdom of the Netherlands) discuss with Ricky Burdett the challenges and approaches of rebuilding critical infrastructure in areas prone to flooding and their engagement with communities.

Debate: On the Chicago Architecture Biennial

AAgora is a newly-founded critical architecture debate platform at the Architectural Association in London, which aims to shed light on relevant architectural topics. These debates take the form of an open-table discussion which encourages the audience to participate at any time. AAgora's second debate will be "On the Chicago Biennial" - On Biennials, and how we define contemporary architecture.

International Dialogues: Kunlé Adeyemi

Kunlé Adeyemi’s recent work, the 'Makoko Floating School', is an innovative, prototype floating structure located on the lagoon heart of Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos. This acclaimed project is part of an extensive research project - 'African Water Cities' - being developed by NLÉ, an architecture, design, and urbanism practice founded by Adeyemi in 2010 with a focus on developing cities and communities.

ArchCult '16 Symposium in South India

Archcult ’16 – the annual symposium of the Department of Architecture, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (formerly regional engineering college (REC), Tiruchirappalli) held every year in the month of March (11th, 12th & 13th ). With an active participation of above 1000 students from over 50 colleges, Archcult has been drawing students, professionals, and pioneers from various architectural fields and eminent connoisseurs from across the country. Today, Archcult is one of the most awaited symposiums across the South India.

Exhibition: Savage Architecture: Gian Piero Frassinelli, Superstudio and 2A+P/A

On the 26th of February 2016 the project Savage Architecture — an exhibition at Architectural Association of London and a book published by Black Square both curated by Davide Sacconi — will be presented in a symposium at the Italian Cultural Institute of London. The project recounts the research at the intersection between architecture and anthropology developed in the last fifty years by Gian Piero Frassinelli (former member of Superstudio) and his recent collaboration with 2A+P/A (architectural practice based in Rome).

Berlin Award 2016: Heimat in der Fremde

60 million people the world over have fled their homes. The dimensions of the refugee movement are becoming a major challenge for big cities in particular, where these displaced persons must be accommodated and provided for, given work and integrated into society in large numbers and in a short time. For this reason, it is necessary to quickly create adequate living space and interfaces between this living space and the urban realm in order to facilitate participation in urban life from the outset.

Exhibition: Paimio Sanatorium – Light, air and health

Paimio Sanatorium, an early major work by Alvar Aalto, is the subject of an exhibition on show in the Gallery at the Alvar Aalto Museum from 12 February to 10 April 2016. The exhibition is based on a conservation management plan prepared for the first time in Finland. The plan involves the most detailed investigation so far of the hospital, which was built for tuberculosis patients.

Call For Applications: IAAC Global Summer School 2016 - Hyper Cities

The Global Summer School (GSS) is a platform defined by ambitious, multi-scalar investigation on the implications of emergent techniques in our planned environments. Each year, international teams located in key cities around the globe explore a common agenda with projects that are deeply embedded in diverse local conditions.

IaaC GSS is a full-time two-week course open to creative and innovative people who are interested in fields such as architecture, urban planning, digital fabrication and design, searching for a multidisciplinary experience in an international environment.

Lecture and Book Launch: International Space Station: Architecture Beyond Earth

Join David Nixon at the Architectural Association on March 2nd for an evening lecture and book launch for his new book – International Space Station: Architecture Beyond Earth – which is published by Circa Press on 1 March. This book offers the first comprehensive account of the Station’s conception, design development and assembly in space and its publication coincides with Tim Peake’s current mission to the Station.

Exhibition: Radical Cairo at the Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Architecture

The 2015 Shenzhen Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism exhibits, makes, and discusses architecture that reflects the reuse and rethinking of existing buildings, the re-imagination of our cities, and the remaking of our daily lives by design. It is be a biennale of fragments, not abstract plans; of collage, not grids; of tactical urbanism, not top-down strategies. The ETH Zurich Master of Advanced Studies Program in Urban Design – chaired by Marc Angélil and directed by Charlotte Malterre-Barthes – has investigated informal settlements in Cairo, looking into designs for affordable housing units in the neighborhood of Ard-el-Liwa.
