University of Luxembourg to Launch Master in Architecture on European Urbanization and Globalization

Starting in September 2017, the University of Luxembourg launches a two-year, English-taught Master program on Architecture, European Urbanization, and Globalization. The program is situated within an interdisciplinary environment, where the design studio as the core of the study program will be constantly fed by surrounding fields, such as geography and geospatial analysis, regional and urban development, circular economy, sustainable transport systems, energy performance of built environments, and other themes.

SCI-Arc Making+Meaning Summer Program

Every summer, SCI-Arc opens its doors to students and young professionals from multiple disciplines and diverse backgrounds seeking to explore the field of architecture from the school’s distinctive vantage point of hands-on design and experimentation. The Making+Meaning summer program offers participants a unique opportunity to be a part of the vibrant design community at SCI-Arc as they work on projects to jumpstart or enhance a design portfolio. This immersive workshop runs from July 10th – August 4th and is now open for registration.

INDESEM 2017 is Open for Entries

INDESEM (International Design Seminar) is a biennale, founded by a group of students in 1962. The seminar was born from a desire to experiment with architecture and urban planning, while exploring beyond the boundaries of the curriculum. For this week the 80 participating students embark on a design project accompanied by lectures and discussions with renowned architects and theorists. InDeSem provides an environment in which students, architects, planners, designers and theorists engage in conversation and discussion about the current and future position of the architect, designer and planner within society.

Call for Papers: Society of Architectural Historians 71st Annual International Conference

The Society of Architectural Historians is now accepting abstracts for its 71st Annual International Conference in Saint Paul, MN, April 18­–22. Please submit an abstract no later than 5:00 p.m. CDT on June 15, 2017, to one of the 45 thematic sessions, the Graduate Student Lightning Talks or the open sessions. The thematic sessions have been selected to cover topics across all time periods and architectural styles. SAH encourages submissions from architectural, landscape, and urban historians; museum curators; preservationists; independent scholars; architects; scholars in related fields; and members of SAH chapters and partner organizations.

Hello Wood Launches Call for Team Leaders and Students at Project Village 2017

Masters of wooden architecture and design, Kengo Kuma & Associates, expert of portable architecture, Robert Kronenburg, prestigious architectural and design studios, Local Architecture Network (France) and SKREI (Portugal), and International landscape and urban designers, Groundlab will be some of the most inspiring guests at Hello Wood international summer school & festival for the arts and architecture this coming summer. This year promises to be a unique one as the three-year-long architectural experiment and research programme called Project Village—exploring the relationship between communities and their built environment by building its own settlement—comes to its final stage calling new participants to question, respond to, build on, or dissect the existing artefacts, concepts and ideas. In a special year, special participants are needed: Hello Wood calls for team leaders and students to apply to the summer school and festival (1-9 July 2017) and join the continued exploration of building a community settlement, responding to the theme "Shaping Communities: Courtyards." Het Nieuwe Instituut Announces International Call for Fellows

Het Nieuwe Instituut, the Dutch institute of architecture, design, and digital culture, announces an open call for three research fellows to work in residence from September 2017 to February 2018. Since its founding in 2013, Het Nieuwe Instituut has fostered research initiatives in the form of exhibitions, events, archival investigations and publications by a variety of practitioners, independent researchers, academics and curators.

Call for Entries: Searching for New Heart

Szczecin – a city in north-western Poland, inhabited by over 400,000 people, is searching for an original idea to develop an area of 200 ha located in the very heart of the City. To this end, its authorities have just announced the international urban and architectural competition “Łasztownia – the New Heart of the City”. The record-breaking prizes, totaling EUR 97,900, clearly shows how serious the Mayor of Szczecin is about the Competition results.

Ideas Competition: What Would a 24-Hour City of the Future Look Like?

The Built Environment Trust along with the Greater London Authority are seeking ideas that could help the nightlife of cities work better – be culturally, socially, economically beneficial.

The Iconic Awards 2017 is Now Open for Submissions

The Iconic Awards honor superb examples of the interaction of all disciplines in an independent architecture and design competition which focuses on internationally outstanding construction projects, innovative interior and product design as well as compelling communication in an architectural context.

The conference, organized by the IARC (Independent Architecture Research Colloquia) of the University of Architecture of Innsbruck, is related to the issue of aesthetics; recollecting and reframing the reflections over architecture, representation, formalism, aesthetics, composition and historical changes that have been discussed within the last years. The Symposium’s aim is to collect a comprehensive set of state-of-the-art approaches to the questions of architectural and urban form and thus provide an updated examination of aesthetic, formal and typological investigations.

Clandon Park International Design Competition - Call for Submissions

Through the Clandon Park International Design Competition, the National Trust is searching for a world-class multidisciplinary design team to restore and reimagine Clandon Park, the Trust’s Grade I listed, 18th-century Palladian house, near Guildford in the southeast of England, which suffered a major fire two years ago.

The Trust envisages a sensitive and thoughtful restoration of some of the principal state rooms on the ground floor along with the introduction of new gallery spaces for imaginative programming and expanded visitor facilities on the upper levels.

Call for Entries: Reconvexo Rio de Janeiro Subway Competition

RECONVEXO is a competition of ideas for the reuse of the remaining staves from the expansion works of Rio de Janeiro’s Subway.

There are more than 6,000 staves originally intended for the tunnel connecting Line 4 to Gávea Station. This stretch should have been inaugurated along with other stretches executed for the Olympic Games Rio2016. Today, due to the financial crisis in the State of Rio de Janeiro, the execution of this expansion work is indefinitely on hold. The result is a huge amount of precast concrete parts with no certain destination. To reinterpret its possible uses, to redefine its meaning: this is the purpose of the RECONVEXO Competition.
