This book presents the radical architectural strategies and poetic cultural projects developed by OPEN Architecture, and the opportunities and challenges that arise from redefining built forms. Drawing on a series of conversations and site visits to six recent groundbreaking projects, architecture writer Catherine Shaw describes how Beijing-based OPEN Architecture is reinventing and responding to China's complex and fast-changing cultural landscape with projects that mark a new era for contemporary Chinese cultural architecture. OPEN Architecture was founded in New York in 2003 by Li Hu and Huang Wenjing, while their Beijing office opened in 2008. From a contemporary art gallery buried beneath a sand dune to a sculptural open-air theatre in a remote mountain valley near the Great Wall, co-founders Li Hu and Huang Wenjing re-evaluate conventional Western assumptions about culture and design as they base each pioneering project on the needs and plea-sures of humanity within the context of diverse terrains and climates. In doing so, they not only consider how cultural architecture looks, but how it works. Projects are presented with commentary and contextual information as well as new analyses and archival material, including outstanding color photography, plans and drawings, and exploratory sketches. This book provides a fresh perspective on contemporary cultural architecture and place making, hig-lighting the architects' sources of inspiration, their challenges, and their construction methods, showing how each impactful project responds to China's distinctive context.

The Warming Huts is a public art and architecture installation held annually at mid-winter on the major rivers of Winnipeg, Canada. The huts are selected through an international design competition, and via the invitation of select designers or artists. This book, published to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the project, celebrates and discusses the annual project as a critical body of work foregrounding the poetics and politics of public space, while highlighting the variety of architectural narratives expressed in the Huts. A comparative analysis of the more than one thousand entries is included in the volume.

A city at the crossroads of the East and the West, Beirut has been experiencing an excitement in all artistic fields since the early 2000s. Design is no exception to this dynamic and is even one of its most important indicators.

Archinfo Finland seeks for exhibition proposals to be presented in the Pavilion of Finland at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. The first stage of the open call closes 24 April.

The Summerschool RURAPOLIS is structured around a series of lectures at the Palacio Condestable in Pamplona, with well-known personalities at European and regional level: Anna Chavepayre from the Collectif Encore (winner of the Kasper Salin Prize 2018), Orekari Estudio and Studio Acte. Also, the summerschool RURAPOLIS will be introduced online by the ENSA Versailles, the coordinating institution of the project, in a round table event in presence of the architect and author of Walkscapes Francesco Careri, the architect and researcher Luciano Aletta, Atelier Aïno and Paul-Emmanuel Loiret, professor at the ENSA Versailles and raw earth architect.

The historic medieval cities of Kathmandu valley managed to create an urban legacy that was remarkable for its times, marked by sophisticated architectural expression in timber and brick, innovative water structures like hitis, wells, ponds and water spouts that formed strong community-level spaces along with urban level public square in form of Durbar Square right at the heart of the city. These expressions of buildings, water structures and public spaces are amongst the most refined and bold examples of an urban order anywhere in the world making the Kathmandu valley an open-air museum of historic architectures and cities.

Indonesian Dedicated Architecture, Interior Design, and Building Material Exhibition.

United Contemporary is proud to present Turning of Day, a contemplative solo exhibition by Toronto-based painter Stefan Berg. In this new suite of plein air paintings and studio interpretations, Berg draws out and emphasises a compelling geometry found in nature. Grasping the weight and mass of the subject, both in feeling and substance, the artist makes real the physicality of experience, to procure a tangible, haptic touch for the eyes. However, the true subject of this exhibition is light. Returning to familiar landscapes with cumulative inquiry, Berg has painted on-site and from memory, the evanescence of time, exploring temporality and duration. As a result, his paintings are evocative of the mechanics of seeing, layering and revising the passing light and atmosphere observed over days, sometimes months, even years.

Espace Rivière is a project to house a library and maison de la culture, along with community and recreational spaces and an Accès Montréal office in a de-partitioned building. The multidisciplinary architecture competition will involve construction totalling approximately 10,060 m2 of gross floor area.
