Architecture and urbanism are ways of materializing what is to come. Yet, how can we design a common future while keeping this future open to new meanings and in constant motion, driven by the subjects who appropriate it? How can architects understand themselves as part of the movement to revalue collective spaces? How can we use this tool to distribute power—building direct democracy and free behavior through participation in everyday life? How can we recognize relationship as a tool for constructing an architecture of freedom?

Given that 90% of cities are built without architects and urban planners, who are the real architects imagining and building the world we want to live in? What modes of production, materials, and forms of relationship and social reproduction are practiced by these collectives, pointing the way toward possible, inclusive, diverse, just, and ecological futures? What architectures exist to foster freedom, collaboration, co-responsibility, and care—for oneself, for others, and for the spaces we inhabit?

Since the 2013 protests, there has been a clear resurgence of the concept of the public sphere in Brazil, particularly in metropolises like São Paulo. Within a context of speculation and a commodified city—where both spaces and public services are driven by capital accumulation, and where public authority operates merely as power rather than in the public interest—a growing movement to reclaim urban spaces by previously marginalized actors has emerged.

Over the next 20 years, 45% of urban land should consist of public spaces (streets, parks, and plazas), according to UN-Habitat. What will be the quality of these spaces? Which stakeholders will assume responsibility for their management? The movement to reclaim public spaces by city dwellers is gaining momentum both in Brazil and globally. The right to the city is at the forefront of urban discourse, and at its core, many citizens are committing to actively participate in decisions regarding their cities, or even in everyday initiatives to improve public spaces.

The following reflections emerged from SENEMAU, the National Seminar of Model Offices of Architecture and Urbanism, which took place in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, from August 9 to 18, 2019. This national gathering, held since 1997, brought together 12 student collectives from various cities across the country for an immersive experience focused on university outreach and the social and political role of architects and urban planners. The self-managed student gathering hosted an exhibition of works, debates on various themes, and immersive experiences in areas of interest across the city. 

Having lost their sense of purpose, cities are searching for new meanings. Today we rely on digital social networks to access common goods like culture, leisure, and meaningful encounters—but how can we leverage technology to enable the right to the city during a pandemic? We are witnessing a global slowdown in urban development: the emptying of cities in India, the urban exodus in France, and a return to smaller towns and rural areas where there is lower population density and a higher quality of life. What is the city if not the promise of access to the commons it offers? 

Escola Sem Muros (School Without Walls) emerges from a desire for other possible practices and alternative ways of learning and relating: with one another, with the walls of the city, and with the learning potential inherent in each territory and individual. It brings together people who have joined for a common purpose: to go beyond physical, social, and political barriers, and to open cracks in both urban brutality and the educational formats that segregate worlds. Its methodology is based on engagement (valuing local identity), construction (the building site as a learning platform), and care (shared management of public spaces and care structures), proposing a process of holistic education.
