Trends Report: What Building Materials are Architects searching for?

ArchDaily is the most visited architecture website in the world. 2.95 million registered users browse the site on a daily basis, generating millions of clicks, searches, and traffic over our library of thousands of projects, and products, giving us invaluable insights on the most relevant industry trends.

We want to share with you our latest discoveries on what materials are generating the most searches and interest, as shown by the architects who have been using ArchDaily as a tool for the past 2 years.

Concrete is used twice as much as all other building materials with a world production of approximately 5 billion cubic yards annually. Chemistry World Magazine announced that by 2050, concrete use is predicted to reach four times the 1990 level.

Despite these numbers, it seems architects are more interested in learning about other building materials, such as Brick and Wood. As shown in the chart, Brick tops the list of the most searched materials on ArchDaily, experiencing a significant growth compared to the number of searches in 2018 (+11,38%).

Of a total of 20,000 terms related to architecture, Brick occupies the 17th position, followed by Wood in the 24th position  in ArchDaily searches. The list continues with  Concrete (71), Glass (151) and Steel, closing the ranking in the 191st position.

Why did the Brick and Wood Industries generate more interest in Architects last year?

Both Brick and Wood have shown important innovations that allow for more efficiency while adapting new technologies and digitalization. Last year our readers were amazed with the Evolution of Bricklaying Robots and the possibilities Augmented Reality offered in the construction of complex designs. In the case of wood, we learned that different panel options have allowed more universal usage of this eco-friendly material. Engineered woods, such as Cross Laminated Timber and Glued Laminated Wood, revolutionized the industry, paving the way for the construction of wooden skyscrapers in the near future.
