The Serpentine Galleries, Google Arts & Culture and trustee David Adjaye have released a call for augmented reality (AR) architecture proposals to run alongside the 2019 Serpentine Pavilion this summer. Applicants are asked to propose "imaginary city spaces and speculations on the built environment to be developed and experienced” in AR onsite at the galleries. The call invites applicants to consider AR as a digital layer that offers new opportunities to design, visualize and experience.
The jury, composed of writers, curators, designers, technologists, and architects, is evaluating proposals on three different categories: How does the proposal rethink the city and how it can be reinvented through AR? How does the proposal use AR to reconsider spatiality? How does the proposal reactivate the site with specificity for 12 million visitors each year? The team asks that proposals explore how AR can be used to develop, transform and enact new ideas about how our cities and public spaces are designed.
Entrants who are selected for the two-stage competition’s shortlist will move ahead to the second round and will be given a stipend of $1,000 to further develop their idea. After that, one winning proposal will be realized on the gallery’s grounds in July, and the winning team will receive approximately $3,800 for travel and accommodation expenses.
