Exhibition "Ilustraciones" by Smiljan Radic and Alejandro Lüer and Days of Oris 15 Symposium

Last October, Oris - Croatian magazine for architecture and culture of living, had a great pleasure of hosting an internationally recognised Chilean architect – Smiljan Radić. During his visit to Zagreb he delivered a lecture entitled Bestiario at the Days of Oris 15 symposium where he also received ORIS ACO Award and was present at the opening of the exhibition Ilustraciones in the Oris House of Architecture. Among lectures that were held at Days of Oris 15 were ones by Anne Lacaton, Terunobu Fujimori, Fabrizio Barozzi and other architects.

Radić is winner of numerous architectural awards and recognitions and author of the Serpentine Pavilion in 2014, along with many other projects published in most prestigious architectural magazines. When he graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Catholic University of Chile in 1989, he travelled for three years, studied at Instituto Universitario di Architettura in Venice, and in 1995 he opened his architectural office in Santiago. In 2001 he received the award Best National Architect Under 35 by the Chilean Architects Association and in 2009 he was declared an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects.

Radić delivered his lecture in Zagreb at the Days of Oris 15 symposium that took place on 17 and 18 October 2015. Speaking in front of nearly two thousand people, majority of which were architects and students of architecture from Croatia and the region, he managed to capture the attention of the visitors by explaining his projects and providing insight into his complex way of thinking. Despite his modest warning at the start of the lecture that it would be challenging for him to explain his thoughts linearly, he delivered a fascinating lecture accompanied by a number of interesting visuals and background stories. The lecture, as well as the entire symposium, was extremely well received and covered by the Croatian Radio Television and most important newspapers and web portals in Croatia and region.

This year the ORIS ACO award was given to Smiljan Radić for an outstanding contribution to architecture. Having received the ORIS award, a glass pyramid designed by Álvaro Siza and given once a year by the editorial board of the Oris magazine, Smiljan has joined the giants of architecture, who were already presented with the award – Peter Zumthor, Kazuyo Sejima, Rafael Moneo, Herzog & de Meuron office, Winy Maas and award-winning Croatian architectural offices Studio UP and 3LHD and architect Idis Turato.

Next to his lecture presented at Days of Oris, Radić further enriched the cultural life of Zagreb with his exhibition Ilustraciones, whose temporary home (until 6 November) is the Oris House of Architecture. The exhibition has been realized in the colaboration with architect Alejandro Lüer, whose masterful production of models enabled the conversion of Radić’s architecture into the works of art. Exhibition was set up in the Gallery of the Oris House of Architecture, where Lüer patiently and meticulously took care of each detail.

Oris magazine for architecture and culture of living has been active since 1998. The magazine is published bimonthly in Croatian and English. The editorial concept of the magazine is based on the promotion and evaluation of buildings of cultural significance. Since its launch the magazine has been focused on architecture produced by outstanding individuals and highly valuable works, with the certain emphasis on the Middle-European context.

Oris House of Architecture is a place of meetings, socialising, creativity and good vibrations; place for the promotion of architecture, design, art and culture. In the attractive area of over 600 m2 there is a multimedia hall, readers‘ corner Forcimer, offices of the Oris magazine and the web portal and the club restaurant Voncimer.

Ilustraciones was opened on 17 October, within the programme of the first day of the Days of Oris 15 symposium. The opening was attended by a great number of people and was surely one of the most important cultural events in Zagreb. The models such as The Castle of the Selfish Giant, House for the Poem of the Right Angle, The Boy Hidden in an Egg and other exhibits will be presented in the Gallery until 6 November 2015.

On the occasion of the exhibition Ilustraciones Oris House of Architecture has issued the catalogue of the exhibition and a specially designed notebook which includes Radić’s sketches. Despite the great efforts and exceptional organization by Oris and Oris House of Architecture, the whole project of collaboration with Smiljan Radić would not have been possible without the great help from the partners from Chile – Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes and Ministerio de Realciones Exteriores, whose help did not only arrive as a financial donation, but also as a support and interest they have shown in Oris and its projects, which will hopefully result in future joint project and mutual support and partnership.

Other partners that have supported the exhibition Ilustraciones are the City of Zagreb and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia.
