Win a FREE Full Pass to Greenbuild from reThink Wood

This fall, reThink Wood is heading to Washington D.C. for Greenbuild - the world's largest conference and expo dedicated to green building. If you haven’t registered already, this is your chance to win a freepass to the conference and participate in educational workshops celebrating sustainable architecture.

reThink Wood is offering a full pre-paid pass to the 2015 Greenbuild Conference & Expo ($1,050 value) to one lucky ArchDaily reader. The winner will be invited to meet with architects onsite that are passionate about sustainable design with wood in a variety of structures – including tall wood buildings.

To be entered to win, simply fill in your details in the form at the bottom of this article before Monday, October 19 at 12:00PM EST.

More on reThink Wood at Greenbuild after the break.

This year at Greenbuild, attendees are invited to join reThink Wood (booth #1527) for a variety of discussions with architects and developers about the advancements being made in next-generation lumber and mass timber technologies to encourage sustainable design. Guests will be invited to personally meet with experts on these topics – including Solid Wood author Joe Mayo of Mahlum Architects and the winners of the recent U.S. Tall Wood Building Prize Competition.

On the tail of the recent competition results, it will be an exciting time to talk about how tall wood structures are gaining traction in the U.S. – with more architects opting for a sustainable solution to attaining safe, cost-effective, high-performing tall buildings in urban-dense settings.

Additional ways reThink Wood invites attendees to engage with experts at Greenbuild include:

#GreenbuildChat Twitter Q&A
Hosted by @reThinkWood
Wednesday, November 18 – 1:00 - 1:30 p.m. ET
reThink Wood Booth (#1527)

To kick off the conversation at Greenbuild about the movement toward tall wood buildings, Twitter users are invited to participate in a virtual chat at the conference by using the hashtag #GreenbuildChat. The chat will include a panel of architects, developers and engineers to share their learnings and experience designing with wood. Those who are at the conference are welcome to gather for the chat in-person with experts at the reThink Wood booth.

Solid Wood: New Trends in Mass Timber Architecture, Technology and Design
Joe Mayo, Architectural Designer at Mahlum Architects
Wednesday, November 18 – 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Through the rise of mass timber, one of the world’s oldest building materials has been reimagined as a sustainable alternative to concrete and steel. Innovations in solid wood building systems, which include large engineered wood members such as glue-laminated timber (GLT), laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and cross-laminated timber (CLT), have created new opportunities for wood, whether that means going taller, spanning farther, or building faster. Driven by wood’s light environmental footprint, large-scale wood buildings around the world are helping to spur building code changes, improve wood-based economies and demonstrate the untapped potential of this versatile material. This presentation will provide insight into these new, exciting architectural developments through detailed case studies that will expand your perception of wood’s possibilities.

High-Performance School Buildings: Wood’s Role as Low Carbon Structure & Renewable Fuel Source
Mark Herter, Senior Associate with Centerbrook Architects & Planners
Wednesday, November 18 – 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

Wood is a beautiful, durable and sustainable material for buildings. It can also be an excellent source of renewable energy. This seminar will explore the use of wood as a building material as well as the availability of woody biomass, its harvesting, and its role as a source of renewable energy for projects. Two case studies will illustrate two very different ways wood can be used on campuses—as an enduring building material and a heating source for buildings.

Wood as a Restorative Material in Healthcare Environments
David Fell, Research Lead at FPInnovations, and Sally Augustin, Principal with Design with Science
Wednesday, November 18 – 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.

The average North American spends 90 percent of his or her time indoors. This not only makes the design of building interiors ever more important, but calls for the buildings themselves to provide a connection to nature. This presentation will examine a growing body of research suggesting that the human relationship with wood is similar to positive responses of our species to other natural cues such as nature, natural sunlight, and plants. Biophilia, the affinity of humans for life and life-like processes, will be discussed in the context of visual wood used in healthcare facilities and subsequent effects on patients and staff.

Carbon Implications of Construction Material Selection
Jim Bowyer, Director of Responsible Materials Program at Dovetail Partners, Inc.
Thursday, November 19 – 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Carbon emissions have come to the forefront of public discourse and increasingly, of public policy. This presentation will focus on the objective of minimizing carbon emissions associated with building construction and operation. The carbon implications of building material selection will be examined, using examples of real world projects and material comparisons to illustrate the extent to which a building’s carbon footprint is influenced by the construction materials used. Emissions linked to buildings will be discussed in the larger context of carbon and climate, with consideration of the current vs. historical situation, tools for assessing carbon liberation, carbon equivalency, fossil vs. atmospheric carbon, CO2 sequestration, and implications of potential carbon regulation for materials selection and building design.

Sustainability Through Reuse: A Case Study of Reclaimed Wood and Energy Efficiency
Todd Stine, Partner at ZGF Architects LLP
Thursday, November 19 – 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

When designing the new Federal Center South – Building 1202, a new 209,000-square-foot office building in Seattle, WA, the General Services Administration (GSA) faced a dilemma. An existing, 1940s-era heavy timber-framed warehouse still occupied the site, and demolition would potentially negate sustainability goals desired for the new building. This presentation, given from the perspective of the project architect, focuses on the innovative resolution to that challenge—showing how 300,000 board feet of lumber from the existing building were integrated into the new home of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This LEED Gold project utilized reclaimed wood both as exposed structure and finish while meeting the stringent performance requirements of the GSA’s Design Excellence Program.
