Preview DS+R’s New Stanford Art & Art History Building with Images by Iwan Baan

Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) has shared initial photos by Iwan Baan of their new McMurty Building for Art & Art History at Stanford University, which will be officially unveiled to the public on October 6. The 100,000 square foot building will open for the 2015 fall semester, and allow students studying art history and students practicing fine arts to work together under the same roof for the first time at Stanford. See and read more about the soon-to-be opened project after the break.

Working from the concept of interaction and collaboration, the building houses a library between two interlocking strands, resembling a floating glass box held by distinct, diagonal forms. The Art History strand pays homage to traditional buildings across Stanford with a stucco façade, while the Art strand has a more modern appearance, including a custom zinc finish.

Upon completion, the building will also feature expanded studios, two digital media studios, a digital darkroom, a print lab, a tinker lab and a sound recording studio, as well as multi-purpose classrooms, galleries, and a 125-seat flexible presentation space.

The McMurty Building will be adjacent to the Cantor Arts Centre, and the third building added to Stanford’s art department in the past three years, following the Bing Concert Hall (2013) and the Anderson Collection (2014), both completed by Ennead Architects.
