Outside Architecture + Design: Digital Design and Fabrication Workshop

Taking place at the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech August 5-9, the Outside Architecture + Design: Digital Design and Fabrication Workshop is offered to advanced high school students and college students completing their first year of studies in a design field. Building on the well established Inside ARCHITECTURE + Design curriculum, the laboratory/workshop is intended to provide a forum for the exploration of emerging design technologies through a one-week immersion. More information after the break.

The world of design is in constant and increasing transformation. Conventional practice is giving way to novel modes of collaboration and the application of new technologies. Design as an integrative process of thinking and making is opening new visions to the way we live and employ our resources. This hands-on course will explore new machines and processes, expanding the perceptual and operational fields of design.

The first iteration of the program focuses on digital design and fabrication utilizing facilities within the college. The workshop will impart an understanding of the context in which these technologies apply to the design fields. The result of the workshop will be a series of design experiments that test the design-to-fabrication workflows resulting in the realization of physical prototypes.

Pre-requisites:

This workshop involves supervised use of various design-related tools and equipment. Maturity and the willingness to precisely follow instructions while interacting with a group of people in a studio environment are requisite. Prior knowledge of software or computing skills is not required.

Costs:

The fee for the week-long workshop is $750. On-campus housing and dining is a separate fee. Workshop materials will be provided; students are encouraged to bring a personal sketchbook. The workshop will utilize computer-controlled equipment including a CNC Router, laser cutter, an Industrial Robotic arm, and a 3D printer. Students are welcome to bring their own laptop, but this is not a requirement. The primary work will be completed using group machines. The goal of the workshop is to present ideas and potentials, so we will be utilizing a range of technologies throughout. Final payment will be due on July 26, 2013. Housing and dining information will be provided later.

Registration:

Outside Architecture + Design is limited to twenty students. To reserve your place, please send a registration fee in the amount of $75 here.
