The first prize winning design of the town hall sports center of Ceske Budejovice by A8000 is based on the existing town planning concept which dates back to the past and which has been proven by time. The project will offer premises for a variable range of activities, both for nearby schools and for sports concentrated in other sports centers in the proximity. The center is – and will be even more so in the future – a significant entrance “gate” for visitors to the town´s historical center. More images and architects’ description after the break.

The Stromovka park reaches with a green wedge to the historical town wall and the revitalized Sokolský island, the romantic confluence of the Vltava and Malše rivers, the nearby Háječek park and the pedestrian and cycling promenades on the river banks create a unique place with a sports hall in its center. The hall, along with a soccer stadium and indoor and outdoor swimming pools form a unique sports enclave in the town and also in the region. The project is also a significant entry for the audience of sporting events in nearby facilities and for visitors and users of the administrative center of the town and the region in the nearby buildings of the Regional Office.

The proposed volume and the architectural design primarily use the morphology of sports facilities, reflecting the building´s function. The basic principle is clear legibility of individual operations, even from outside, which improves orientation in the building both for its visitors and athletes. The project is a set of buildings, including a sports hall, practice hall, athletic corridor and amenities. The sports hall will be used for top and high-performance sporting activities and it consists of a clearly defined volume on a round ground plan. The circular shape enables to accommodate the maximum number of viewers in the most attractive position, i.e. near the center of the sports grounds.

The counterpoint to the sports hall, in terms of volume, will be the practice hall. It has been designed as a simple block with round corners, i.e. its volume fully reflects it function. The practice hall has also some seats for viewers and they will be used mainly during tournaments. The volume composition is complemented with a 90-m-long tube of a running corridor inserted between the two halls at the level of the 2nd overground floor. The tube has an elliptic cross-section and it is an indispensable element of the entire project, both from the viewpoint of the architectural design and, particularly, the function.

The two basic requirements – to develop a sufficient space for operation of the extra-league volleyball team and, at the same time, to provide facilities for games and practicing of other sports – were accompanied by requirements for high quality, modern design and effective operation. The design follows the principle of total variability which provides sporting opportunities for top and high-performance athletes, as well as for the local youth, while hosting top sporting, social and cultural events with high numbers of participants and viewers. Areas for the audience may be separated and structured on as-needed basis to ensure highly economical operation.

The structural solution consists of vertical and horizontals structures made of reinforced concrete. The roofing of the hall has been designed from wooden glued girders arranged radially over a round ground plan. The practice hall is a structure roofed with wooden glued girders arranged in a transversal direction.
