This building is a study of how to introduce light and air in to an apartment building in one of Australia’s densest urban environments. Located in an inconsistent streetscape, this building seeks to define the street edge with the delicate and crystalline forms of the glass screens. The wall of translucent glass serves as a privacy screen for residents and catches the reflections of the water, clouds and sky and brings these elements to the narrow street. The base responds to the tough urban context by utilising the materiality of the nearby wharves. On the upper levels glass screens, off-form concrete and crisp steel detailing create a building that is modern and light. When viewed from Woolloomooloo, the operable solar screens change throughout the day evoking the form of billowing sails.
