Last week, the construction of the new academic building for the Amsterdam University College has began. Mecanoo Architecten of Delft designed the faculty for the University of Amsterdam and VU University Amsterdam.

The new Liberal Arts and Science building will be located in Science Park Amsterdam, the international science and research center in the area referred to as Watergraafsmeer, and will be completed in 2012. More images and information after the break.

The Amsterdam University College (6,000 m2) is an inspiring, sustainable building for international students and their professors. It is a place where students can learn, debate, work together and relax; a home where talents, ideas and ambitions come together.

The new AUC faculty and the Anna Hoeve (a historic farmhouse), together form a new entrance into the Science Park. The entrance is accessible from both the city and the new train station. The building’s characteristic zigzagging roof creates a strong sense of identity for the Amsterdam University College. The striking façade is made of corten steel and furnishes the building with a robust, yet friendly presence. The faculty offers an optimal environment to study in. Daylight enters deep into the building from three elongated voids. The voids form a visual relationship between the different floors, and together with broad staircases, create important venues for students and teachers. The folded roof forms an attic where the more contained, quiet study areas and library are housed. This sustainable, compact building uses ground source heat-cold storage and concrete core activation. A moss sedum roof cover provides not only insulation, but also water storage.
