UNStudio‘s new mixed-use Raffles City is situated near the Qiangtan River in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, .   This Raffles City marks CapitaLand’s sixth large-scale shopping center, including those in Singapore, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Bahrain.  For ’s design, a sleek twisting tower will provide residential and hotel accommodates in its 300,000 square meter total floor area.  The project aims to highlight the area and attract visitors, “In the chain of events and attractions of Hangzhou, like the West Lake area and the commercial centre, the Raffles City project will be at the core of the Qianjiang New Town area and contribute to the recognition of this area as a new destination in the city,” explained the architects.

UNStudio wins competition to design dance theatre in St. Petersburg

un1UNStudio’s design has won a competition to build a 21,000 square meter dance theatre in the historic centre of , Russia. The new complex houses the Eifman Ballet of , headed by choreographer Boris Eifman.

From the four projects presented (Jean Nouvel, UNStudio, Snøhetta & Zao), ’s design was yesterday unanimously chosen by the jury for realisation.

UNStudio’s Retreat Exhibition Opens June 28

With the combined effort of Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos of UNStudio, the Retreat Exhibition will kick off on June 28th at KunstFort Asperen.  The exhibit, which will feature the works of 12 artists, aims to reflect different points of view on their interpretations of ‘retreat’.  The installation creates an atmosphere where “the functionality of the space is interrupted and reality is stretched.”

Pavilions Open at Millenium Park

Zaha Hadid's Pavilion

We introduced the Burnham Plan Pavilions designed by Zaha Hadid and UNStudio a few months ago, and now, both are almost ready to be opened to the public.  Continuing Millenium Park’s tradition of displaying dynamic public art, the pavilions emphasize bettering the future, which echo the ideals of the 1909 Burnham Plan.  Although opening day was June 19th, only UNStudio’s pavilion was complete, as Hadid’s pavilion will require a few more weeks until it will be opened to the public due to its geometric complexities.

UNStudio wins Grand Hyatt Design

Six projects were presented for the competition of a for Frankfurt, Germany.  The jury’s chairperson, Johann Eisele, chose ’s proposal to proceed with further development. “All the proposals were of an exceptionally high standard. The award-winning design by is particularly outstanding as it presents a type of high-rise which does not yet exist in this form in Frankfurt. The contribution by demonstrates how harmony can be created between extensive functional demands and the high requirements of exterior and interior design,” commented Eisele.

Designs for Burnham Plan Centennial by Zaha Hadid and Ben Van Berkel

Alderman Brendan Reilly and the Burnham Plan Centennial Committee today unveiled designs for two temporary pavilions that will be installed this June in Millennium Park, symbolizing the forward-looking agenda of the 220 organizations commemorating this year’s 100th anniversary of the Plan of .

The architects’ rendering of the two recyclable pavilions were released by the Alderman, the Burnham Committee, the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the Art Institute of Chicago and Friends of Downtown. The pavilions will be open from June 19 through October 31 on the South Chase Promenade of Millennium Park.

Both pavilions-one designed by London-based Zaha Hadid and the other by Amsterdam-based Ben van Berkel of UNStudio-emphasize the importance of boldly imagining a better future for all, as Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett did in 1909 in their Plan of Chicago.
