The Solar Park South International design competition awarded French firms OFF architecturePR Architect and Samuel Nageotte for their entry called Verical Villages in Calabria, Italy. The competition played with the theme of a ‘Solar Highway’, re-using sections of the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway soon to be decommissioned by the Italian Highways Authority. The redevelopment of the viaduct section of the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway was carefully considered by the architects for each of its components in order to best integrate the project with the site’s potential. The fundamental question posed by the competition is that of the readaptation of such sites and the possibilities of atypical redevelopment socially, culturally and economically for the region.

OFF Architecture , along with Duncan Lewis Scape Architecture and Jean de Giacinto, has completed the design for the reconstruction of Lycee Jean Moulin in , .   The new college is perfectly integrated into the existing site conditions, creating a dynamic educational facility.  The new building seeks to become a part of the terrain as the form follows the protruding and receding nature of the undulating hills.  The form creates a ripple-like effect across the site and provides a sense of movement to the surrounding region.  When the college  is completed in 2012, users will find themselves benefiting from the natural qualities of their immediate environment and enjoying a learning environment unlike any other.

A few weeks ago, we shared the Bering Strait Project which asked participants to create a massive spanning element connecting Russia to America.  The design would physically join the world together and could potentially promote world unity and peace.  Paris-based OFF Architecture‘s team of Manal Rachdi, Tanguy Vermet, Mathieu Michel, Takanao Todo, and Lily Nourmansouri was awarded second place in the professional category of the competition.  Their project “does not simply concern itself with the construction of a commercial or railway link, nor a bridge connecting one continent to another. The amplitude, siting, geopolitical context as well as the global ecological conscience entails a proposal far more audacious, an active project sensitive to the conditions of the site.”
