International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR): ‘Making CIty’ Lectures

By — Filed under: Events ,mini , , ,

Highline, New York / Courtesy of IABR

In partnership with AIR, the architecture centre in , the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) is organizing five lectures on the theme ‘Making City’ which will run from September 13th to November 8th.

We are currently witnessing one of the biggest changes in the history of mankind. A revolution is taking place almost imperceptibly, the force and scale of which is unprecedented: urbanization. In just a few decades almost 80% of mankind will live in cities. More than 90% of our wealth will be generated there. And all that on less than 3% of the earth’s surface. Urbanization is inevitable, and that is precisely why it offers opportunities for a future in which millions of people enjoy a good balance between prosperity and environment, between economy and ecology. But those opportunities will only present themselves if the city is managed better, designed better, organized better, and planned better than it is at the moment. In Progress: E Tower / Wiel Arets Architects

rendering

The E Tower is a high rise residence that will serve as a landmark within its newly built urban environment while seeking to bring the amenities of a world class hotel to tower’s residents The E Tower is located in an area of whose urban plan was drawn up by the Dutch landscape firm West 8. The original brief for the area includes the E Tower, the E Block and a slender end piece of the adjacent Block J, which are all apartment buildings in this emerging district. A gap between the E Tower and Block J will shape the area’s entrance while simultaneously providing an outdoor space. Each building in this emerging district has been named after one of the world’s cities with the E Tower taking the title of ‘New York’, aptly reflecting its prominent stance within the cluster.

Help us with our Architecture City Guide: Amsterdam

By — Filed under: Arch Daily ,Featured , , ,

Courtesy of Flickr CC License / Bart van Damme

Next week we will be taking our Architecture City Guide to and we need your help. To make the City Guides more engaging we are asking for your input on which designs should comprise our weekly list of 12-24. In order for this to work we will need you, our readers, to suggest a few of your favorite modern/contemporary buildings for the upcoming city guide in the comment section below. Along with your suggestions we ask that you provide a link to an image you took of the building that we can use, the address of the building, and the architect. (The image must be from a site that has a Creative Common License cache like Flickr or Wikimedia. We cannot use images that are copyrighted unless they are yours and you give us permission.) From that we will select the top 12-24 most recommended buildings. Hopefully this method will help bring to our attention smaller well done projects that only locals truly know. With that in mind we do not showcase private single-family residences for obvious reasons. Additionally, we try to only show completed projects.

This week we are headed to Amsterdam.

Example of the information we need for your suggestion:

With a primary focus for new construction in South, 2700 new houses will be developed in the and Zuidas zones. The masterplan is currently the biggest project in this area, with construction due to start in 2014. The plans are yet to be finalised, as the city must reclaim the land from companies which occupy the existing temporary buildings.
