AD Interviews: Craig Konyk, kOnyk Architecture

By — Filed under: ArchDaily Interviews ,Featured ,Videos , , ,

While visiting , we had the chance to stop by Brooklyn-based kOnyk Architecture to speak with the firm’s principal, Craig Konyk.  The architects categorize themselves as a creative architectural design studio – a characteristic that is evident in all of their work ranging from the smaller scale designs, such as their Hybrid House, to their larger scale proposals for the Museum of Polish History.

Their aesthetic – an almost simplistic gesture with an added twist – creates eye catching structures which are rooted back to the contextual underpinnings of the site, or supported by their studies of sustainability (see Girasole), or perhaps an exploration of  redefining the public realm (check out their Museum proposal).

The success of the firm has grown steadily as kOnyk has been awarded two NYFA fellowships, two ACSA Design Awards, six AIA New York Chapter Design Awards, and has exhibited work at Parsons School of Design, the Architectural League of New York, and the Storefront for Art and Architecture.

We are loving the fact that as Field Operations and DS+R’s High Line keeps developing, new residential and commercial entities are following suite, popping up adjacent to the tracks, over the tracks, and even under the tracks.  And now, Konyk Architecture will join in the urban renewal which is unfolding in the Meat-Packing District with their new event space that will rest underneath the High Line adjacent to Neil Denari’s HL23 Condominium (previously featured on AD).

More about the winning event space after the break.

We continue with more proposals for the  Museum of Polish History  Competition, this time with the proposal by kOnyk architecture (more projects by the firm previously featured at AD). One of the key feature’s of their proposal is to construct a parking structure over the Trasa Lazienkowska Highway that will serve as a “land bridge” that will unify the park as well as be a platform for observation of the Wilsa River below.

Girasole, by konyk

By — Filed under: Sustainability , ,

Our friends over at konyk (Brooklyn based practice) shared with us their entry for the Andes Sprouts Society residency studio competition, a project named Girasole.

Gathering all of its energy from the sun, GIRASOLE is a single room studio that is autonomous, movable and flexible. Its independence allows it to function completely off the local utility grid. By manipulating the surface area for maximum solar exposure and utilizing thin battery packs embedded in its chassis, GIRASOLE converts the sun into AC current to heat and electrify the studio. Like Thomas Alva Edison’s 1893 Black Maria, GIRASOLE is formed by the function of sunlight, and follows it across the landscape.
