Malcolm Reading Consultants (MRC) has been appointed by Kaunas City Municipality to run a one-stage design contest for Kaunas’ new Concert Centre. The substantial new building for this leading Lithuanian city, which has just won the title European Capital of Culture 2022, will encompass a world-class concert venue as well as multifunctional spaces for public and community events.

The one-stage contest will launch in early summer and conclude in the autumn. The initiative follows the success of the recent Science Island contest, which was the most popular architectural competition in Lithuania’s history.

3 Firms Selected in Competition to Design National "Science Island" in Lithuania

The government of Lithuania announced today the 3 winning architecture firms of a competition to design a new National Science and Innovation Center, to be known colloquially as “Science Island,” in the city of Kaunas, Lithuania. The competition, organized by Malcolm Reading Consultants, saw entries from 144 teams, making it the largest design content ever held in Lithuania.

Nestled in the heart of the UNESCO designated and celebrated university city, Kaunas, the science center will be located on a 13,000 square meter (140,000 square foot) site on Nemunas Island in the Neman River, adjacent to the Žalgiris Arena and within short walking distance to Kaunas’ historic Centras district. The new €25M complex will “celebrate recent achievements in science and global technologies with the aim of inspiring visitors to expand their knowledge and support innovation,” and will focus on research on the environment and ecosystems.

This one-stage anonymous design contest seeks concept designs for Lithuania’s new €25M National Science and Innovation Centre along with an urban integration plan for Nemunas Island.

The Island has the potential to be an exceptional area of natural beauty and is strategically positioned within Kaunas, one of UNESCO’s global creative cities. Science Island, scheduled to open in 2018, will further develop Kaunas’ profile as one of the Baltics’ key knowledge and cultural hubs and as an increasingly popular visitor destination. A former industrial centre, Kaunas has in recent years reinvented itself as a diverse academic and business city. The city benefits from a delightful riverine topography as well as a unique legacy of pre-war and notable modernist architecture.
