IN-Gawa: Community Housing Proposal / INDEX Architecture

The proposal for a community housing development in Tomisato city, a small town close to Narita Airport in ’s Chiba Prefecture, takes as its point of departure the Japanese concept of Engawa or verandah space that can be found in many forms of traditional housing types. Designed by INDEX architecture, the competition called for the design of eight detached houses on a semi rural plot that questions the validity of suburban expansion. Therefore, their design proposes a new approach to living on the fringes of the Tokyo ‘megacity’. More images and architects’ description after the break.

Hotel Liesma Proposal / INDEX Architecture


Australian studio INDEX Architecture has completed a proposal for a new hotel on the beach side of a resort in , Latvia. The design is located a short walk from the beachfront and includes 130 rooms, a restaurant, conference and health club facilities. The brief called for a design based around the theme of music that reused an existing tower on the site. The ground floor is to be constructed from a curved timber LVL framed roof structure, which was drawn from the waveforms of Handel’s ‘Water Music.’ The tower reuses the existing concrete structure with a new curtain wall featuring a white ceramic interlayer pattern. Busan Metropolitan Opera House Competition Proposal / INDEX Architecture


The Metropolitan Opera House competition provides an opportunity not only to develop a new performing arts hub for south-eastern Korea, but also to re-consider the icon in architecture and its presence in the 21st century city. The contemporary understanding of the opera house is as a monumental object that is detached from the city, and designed to be appreciated through selected vistas. In the opposite of this, ‘Intermezzo’, designed by INDEX Architecture, seeks to adopt a language of continuity with its context. More images architects’ description after the break.

Eroding the Edge: Urban Landscaping in Kyiv Competition / INDEX Architecture

Australian practice INDEX Architecture has been shortlisted in the “Urban Landscaping in Kiev for Euro 2012” competition. The competition, which was recently completed at the CANaction 2011 Architecture Festival in Kyiv, sought submissions tackling some of the latent urban problems facing the city today and proposing solutions that could be achieved in time for the EURO 2012 football tournament, which the is co-hosting with Poland. INDEX’s proposal sought to reconnect the city of Kiev with its waterfront area and the Dnieper River in a project called “Eroding the Edge.”
