Calgary: The Latest Architecture and News

Let’s Talk About . . . Togetherness

We connect with our built environment through stories, most of which are passed down over time. Join us on November 19 for an exploration on how stories go missing, or how some perspectives remain below the radar. Community is built upon understanding and empathy. What changes as we bring different stories together?

Speakers:

Avnish Nanda / Legal Advisor
Michelle Robinson / Host of Native Calgarian
Despina Stratigakos / Architectural Historian

When: September 19, 2019; 6:30 p.m.
Where: Calgary Central Library, Patricia A. Whelan Performance Hall
Tickets: $12 advance, $6 students. $15 at doors.

Calgary’s upcoming Attabotics Headquarters, designed by the Modern Office of Design + Architecture, physicalizes complex circulatory systems into a structure that is simultaneously aesthetically pleasing and programmatically successful. The client, a robotics manufacturer, was initially inspired by the spatial organization of ant colonies in their design for their emblematic robotic storage and retrieval system. This attribute consequently embeds itself in the new design for their headquarters, which navigates height restrictions, views, programming, and sustainability within this already intricate system of organization.

Let's Talk About . . . Waste

Join design talks (d.talks) in a discussion on the role of design in an often overlooked topic: waste.
In two generations, we’ve shifted from refillable glass bottles to single-use packaging. Serial replacement has become invisible.
Our city has reduced tonnes of waste entering the landfill with recycling and composting options. If we envisioned a future of zero-waste, what’s left to be done?

To explore the subject, d.talks is bringing together a panel to talk about waste from different perspectives. The panel includes Lourdes Juan, founder of the Leftovers Foundation; Sharon Howland, leader of program management for waste and recycling at the City

How Driverless Cars Could, Should - and Shouldn't - Reshape Our Cities

In the race to bring driverless cars from a futuristic fantasy to a present-day reality, developers have touted a plethora of advantages, from reduced traffic congestion on roads to improved safety thanks to the elimination of human error. But the potential widespread implementation of driverless cars could also have profound impacts on the form of our urban environments, fundamentally reshaping infrastructure and land use. As recently as a year ago, this new technology was seen as decades away; however, recently Elon Musk, CEO of electric car maker Tesla, predicted that driverless cars will be capable of making cross-country treks within about two years, and a pilot program in the United Kingdom city of Milton Keynes plans to launch a fleet of driverless pod-taxis by 2018, matching Musk’s timeline.

The driverless car future could be just around the corner, and the normally slow-changing infrastructure of cities could be forced to apply quick fixes to adapt. At the same time, the full potential of driverless cars cannot be realized without implementing significant changes to the urban fabric. So how will driverless cars change how our cities work, and how will our cities adapt to accommodate them?

Lateral Office's 2014 Venice Biennale 'Arctic Adaptations' Exhibition To Tour Canada

Lateral Office's Arctic Adaptations exhibition, which was recognised with a Special Mention at the 2014 Venice Biennale, will travel make its debut in Canada at the Winnipeg Art Gallery this week before heading to Whitehouse, Vancouver, and Calgary. The exhibition "surveys a century of Arctic architecture, an urbanising present, and a projective near future of adaptive architecture in Nunavut" though interactive models, photography, and topographical maps of the twenty five communities of the area, as well as Inuit carvers’ scale models of some of the most recognised buildings in the territory. In addition, it proposes a future of adaptive and responsive architecture for Canada's northern territories.
