Sketchfab CEO Discusses the Impending Revolution of VR in 2016

In this recent post, company CEO and co-founder Alban discusses the likelihood of a Virtual Reality renaissance in 2016. Comparing the platform to its predecessors in digital media, audio and video, he notes that the final steps for any new form of media are: easy to use, working technology; affordable interfaces; and user generated content, prefacing that 2016 may be the year that VR reaches this final step.

Grant: SAH/Mellon Author Awards

The SAH/Mellon Author Awards are designed to provide financial relief to scholars who are publishing their first monograph on the history of the built environment, and who are responsible for paying for rights and permissions for images or for commissioning maps, charts or line drawings in their publications.

Applications for the SAH/Mellon Author Awards will be considered only for book-length, scholarly manuscripts on architectural history and the history of the built environment that are currently under contract with a publisher. Awards are made solely in support of image acquisition or creation, such as for reimbursement of costs for the reproduction

Competition: Can a Building Clean the Air?

Community Forests International (CFI) is excited to announce its second architectural design competition for the backwoods cabin of the future. The first, hosted in 2014, drew in over 50 entries from 11 different countries and served as a platform for exploring how humans can get back to nature in the 21st century. Bringing together visionary architects, artists, green builders and DIYers, this new challenge addresses the climate crisis and will help transform the organization’s 235 hectare (580 acre) organic farm and forest outside of Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada into a Rural Innovation Campus.

AIA Brooklyn and Queens Chapter Launch the Brooklyn & Queens Design Awards

With the growth of new development and renovation in our two boroughs in the past five years, our professional associations are excited to collaborate on this event to celebrate the contributions of the design professions to the urban environment we all share.

In its inaugural year, the Brooklyn + Queens Design Awards (BQDA) program has been established to encourage excellence in architectural design, to raise public awareness of the built environment and to honor the architects, owners and builders of significant projects within the two boroughs. It is the goal and collaboration of the AIA Brooklyn and AIA Queens Chapters to promote chapter members and affiliates through the display of their design and service accomplishments.

European Architecture Students Assembly 2016: "Not Yet Decided"

Five hundred of the most progressive architecture students and young, talented architects are heading to Lithuania this summer. For the first time in its history, the European Architecture Students Assembly (EASA) is being organized in the country. The small Lithuanian seaside town of Nida, located on the the Curonian Spit - the 98 km long thin, curved sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea - will host the event. 120 Hours 2016: 'Whatever Happened to Architectural Space?'

120 Hours, an open architectural competition organised by students from the Oslo School of Architecture, is inviting fellow students from around the world to explore the role of the architect in today's society. The competition, according to its organisers, is in "a unique position to make students reflect on their future profession. We want to challenge people to rethink the future of architecture." Last year's competition, chaired by Julien de Smedt, received 741 submissions from 90 different countries.

Fela Memorial Force HQ: The Architecture of a Leftist Police Force

This architecture exhibition deconstructs the traditional Police Station in Nigeria from an autocratic building into a leftist social infrastructure that allows symbiotic relationship between People and Police. Triggered by political events, the building is named after human rights campaigner and musician, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and hosts protests, concerts, fora and fitness walks. Because of the social infrastructure that it is, Fela Memorial becomes a vehicle to transform the nodal Obalende, Lagos into a smart, accessible district.

Next February 22nd at 5.30 pm, Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos will start MadeinSpain5_USA lecture series at RICE School of Architecture in Houston, where they will show the most significant features of Spanish architecture related to their own work. One day later, on Tuesday at 12PM, there will be a round table with Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, attended by the renowned architect and professor Carlos Jimenez and Martha Thorne - Executive Director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize - as representative of the Foundation for Contemporary Architecture.
