As Norman Foster describes in his firm’s monograph, Foster 40, “Our transformation of the Reichstag is rooted in four related issues: the Bundestag’s significance as a democratic forum, an understanding of history, a commitment to public accessibility and a vigorous environmental agenda.”[1] Foster’s description sounds straightforward enough, but the process of creating the New German Parliament at the Reichstag was only the latest entry in the long, complex, and contentious history of the building.

Germany’s Karlsruhe Palace Becomes the Backdrop for this Stunning Video Mapping Project

06:00 - 20 October, 2015

The ruestungsschmie.de architectural collective has shared with us their latest video mapping project on the façade of the Karlsruhe Palace in Karlsruhe, Germany. Designed to celebrate the city’s 300-year anniversary, the projection illuminates all 300 meters of the building’s façade.

The Karlsruhe Palace is the architectural and urban center of the city, from which 32 streets stem out, structuring the urban design of Karlsruhe. This unique city design served as part of the inspiration behind the audiovisual work. The project was created in partnership with Sound Selektor, who composed the soundtrack using only noises recorded from inside the castle, including doors, switches, stairs and the sounds of specific exhibits.

Tchoban Foundation Museum for Architectural Drawing is hosting its second exhibition from Sir John Soane's Museum, showing masterpieces of British Neoclassicism. The exhibition illustrates the ambition of leading British architects of the late 18th century who strove to create new architecture in the Classical tradition that could compete – in terms of public works, private houses, mausolea, interior detail and even furnishings - with the glories of the Ancient World.

Replicating the corner of Friedrichstrabe and Kavalierstrabe, Guerra De Rossa Arquitectos and Pedro Livni Arquitecto's entry for the Dessau Bauhaus Museum is organized as an L, suspended above ground to create a passage and meeting space in the park in which it’s situated. The monolithic volume, built in reinforced concrete, acts as a single gesture, emphasizing its weight. Read more about this entry after the break.

Exhibition: "After Schengen"

Nickelsdorf - Hegyeshalom A-H (Border between Austria and Hungary)

This exhibition shows 16 pictures of "After Schengen" a series from Spanish photographer Ignacio Evangelista. The "After Schengen" project shows old border crossing points between different states in the European Union. After the Schengen agreement, most of these old checkpoints remained abandoned and out of service, allowing us to gaze into the past from the present. It causes many reflections, especially at a moment in which the EU project is severely discussed.

Penda Proposes a Transformable Design for the New Bauhaus Museum

06:00 - 16 September, 2015

Penda's proposal for the New Bauhaus Museum competition features a transformable design that serves as an “extension of the city on one hand and as a connector to the surrounding park on the other.” The design features two rotating platforms that can open to connect the museum to the sculpture park during the day and close at night.  Although not selected as the winning design, Penda's "Flexible Bauhaus" proposal was one of the finalists selected to participate in the second stage of the competition. Read more about their proposal after the break.
