For Andrew Maynard Architects‘ latest design, a holiday home in Anglesea VIC, the clients’ requirement was simple: more space for their growing and aging family. With the need of the client always in mind, Andrew Maynard Architects set out to create a multi-generational vacation home whose “versatility…allows it to be inhabited simultaneously by all members of the extended family…The design is rigorously addressed at different scales, allowing there to be a certain level of connection and interaction throughout while also providing smaller zones where solace can be found.”

Belgian practice BURO II sent us their latest project in collaboration with Alph’, in charge of the interiors and the furniture design.
The volume is at the head of a row of buildings, on the corner of the village square. Due to the location, its character is determined by the village square to a large extent. The designers took this into account by making the wall facing the village square completely transparent. This unique building consists of an apartment (+1), an office (0) and a partial cellar (-1). There is a separate entrance to the apartment.

The Big Dig is the most expensive highway project in the history of the US. The project included rerouting the Central Artery into a tunnel under the heart of Boston, requiring a tremendous engineering work due to underlaying metro lines and pipes and utility lines that would have to be replaced or moved. Tunnel workers encountered many unexpected geological and archaeological barriers, ranging from glacial debris to foundations of buried houses and a number of sunken ships lying within the reclaimed land.
The Big Dig House by Single Speed Design reutilizes materials from the Big Dig. In that aspect, it´s a remarkable example of recycling in architecture. Project description by the architects after the break.
