The architect purchased this property and decided to move into the house while phasing construction projects. The intention is for the project to be a laboratory for architectural experiments.
The site is in the country in a partially wooded area with rolling hills with views to the west and south. The existing house is located on the highest ground of the site on the edge of where the trees meet the native prairie grass meadow.

These simply organized structures, a cottage and office, replace preexisting buildings that were inefficient, structurally compromised and in serious disrepair. Rebuilding within the footprints of the former structures allowed for the introduction of a clear relationship between the buildings and better response to the site. While architecturally similar, the two new buildings are programmatically diverse with the cottage housing the living elements of the program, and the office hosting the working component.
This project received a 2010 Design Award, Custom Residences Category AIA Housing Award, a 2010 Green GOOD DESIGN The European Center for Architecture and The Chicago Athenaeum, a 2009 Merit Award for Excellence in Architecture AIA San Francisco. The proposed concept for the site was to transform a single-use office building into a genuinely mixed use development incorporating office, retail, restaurant and residential use; seeking to create a new destination integrated within the local area.
The architects chose to situate the buildings around a new courtyard in the center of the site, which is connected by a publicly accessible route and ground floor public uses to the surrounding streets and spaces.
The key elements of the scheme were to introduce activity into the area, provide a mix of uses particularly retail, restaurants and housing introducing daytime and night time surveillance, and creating a properly managed and controlled environment which is reflected in the urban design approach to the layout of retail units, spaces and pedestrian routes.

The ISTB3 (Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building III) is an example of melding together various and diverse departments as one collective unit. Program components include: Applied Biological Sciences and AZ Bio Institute, Applied Cognitive Sciences Center, and the Healthy Lifestyles Center.
Jones Studio designed interior courtyards and exterior gardens to provide an escape from the harsh summer sun and visual relief from the intense research inside the building, all the while, the building is flooded with natural daylight. Shared break room and other common building functions provide opportunities for informal gatherings amongst the different researchers in the building. The offices are purposely placed across the building from the lab areas to further promote impromptu chats. This project received the USGBC LEED Gold certification.

The program was simple a private client, an apartment in the center of Paris, with a large terrace. The architects were challenged with connecting the apartment with the terrace. The result is a large volume that opens directly on the terrace, and it is the main space of floor as well as the entry room. The bedrooms are rearranged on the first level to accomodate the living space and terrace.

Perched high upon Yeomalt Bluff, the Ellis Residence enjoys a commanding 180-degree view of Puget Sound and the Seattle skyline. The owners requested that the residence be sustainable, and the resulting design by Coates Design is the first LEED Platinum home outside the city of Seattle. Jones Studio was selected in 2004 to design a new space for the special Desiderata Alternative Program. This 125 student school is dedicated to helping teens with emotional disorders attain a high school education as well as learn basic life skills. Moving the school from a 1920’s historic building, “Desi” would be relocated into an industrial building. The 30,000 sqf program entailed a complete build-out after gutting the entire interior. A wide variety of program elements from administrative offices, classrooms, food preparation, therapy areas, and fitness rooms are arranged for optimal function within the existing shell.
The architects chose to add exterior planted courtyards within the existing building’s walls in order to create outdoor classrooms and bring in natural light. Eight-foot square skylights take advantage of the industrial building’s high, wood roof structure to distribute natural light to multiple classroom clerestories. Colored glazing and a variety of paint colors de-institutionalize the building and create a rich, varied learning environment for the children.

This site originally was filled with a volume that lacked a clear form and was slicing the property and surrounding garden areas into unusable spaces. The pre-existing garage was removed and a new design was proposed focusing on leisure, gardening, and storage, along with uniting the previously disjointed spaces.

Located in Bainbridge Island, Washington much of the Dorsey Residence is hidden behind a two-story concrete face, however its interior spaces reflect a different experience of warmth, light, and openness. Architects Coates Design created an 18-inch concrete wall that forms two sides of the home’s exterior. These walls provide a poignant counterpoint to the warm wooden and copper box that rests at a slight angle to take full advantage of the site’s water and mountain views. The concrete exterior wall and exposed concrete within the home reduce energy costs by serving as a thermal mass that naturally cools the home in the summer and holds warmth in the winter.
