In June 2010, PTW Architects won a limited competition among five Australian practices for a complex mixed-used project in the heart of Sydney’s central business and retail district. On a complex consolidated site within the CBD of Sydney, the project is positioned between two heritage buildings on George Street and occupying the depth of a city block, the project also includes the restoration of two heritage listed buildings on the site, facing York Street. A development application was lodged in December 2010 and has just been approved by Sydney City Council.More images and architects’ description after the break. read more »

Our friends from UNStudio have shared their latest 66,000 square meter Galleria in Cheonan, South Korea, with us.  The Galleria attempts to re-define the traditional typology of such a place, as changing societal norms in Asia have led supermarkets to operate as “social and semi-cultural meeting places,” according to Ben van Berkel.   As a result, the project blends the functional aspect of a large scale commercial store, while placing emphasis on maintaining a sense of public space for social and cultural aspects.

The complete renaissance of Cherry Hill Mall has repositioned the center as an elegant, contemporary classic shopping/dining experience. Prior to the renovation, the Owner, Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust (PREIT) recognized that while strong customer demographics existed, many were driving by the center to shop at competing developments. With the potential addition of a Nordstrom department store, the need for a major repositioning of the center was appropriate. As a result, the comprehensive renovation of the development included the addition of a 138,000 sqf Nordstrom, an additional 62,000 sqf of two-level mall GLA, a new multi-level parking structure, and the complete renewal of the interior mall, all while the center remained in full operation.
