The Urban Cloak: Apartment – Brickwerks / Jonathan Gibb

By — Filed under: mini ,Residential , ,

front elevation / Courtesy of

Designed for the Boral Brick Awards 2011-2012, ‘The Urban Cloak’ proposal by Jonathan Gibb is an addition to an existing inner city 2 storey brick building, to adapt and add a multi-levelled apartment building. A cloaked figure; standing amongst the debris of style, industry and waste: veiled by a multiplicity of individual bricks, reading as one. At once a sun and rain screen, and veiling against on-lookers sight. The existing building is left, but affected by the new. Its old roof is discarded and the paint of the facade shed, revealing the identity of the brick. More images and architects’ description after the break. read more »

Citadel Skyscraper / Victor Kopeikin + Pavlo Zabotin

By — Filed under: Residential ,Skyscrapers , , ,

The design for the Citadel Skyscraper by Victor Kopeikin and Pavlo Zabotin is a symbiosis of a skyscraper and a residential tank creating a defensive shield to protect the island from the inside against external natural and anthropogenic influences.  The project provides carrying the residential functions of cities in the land out to self-supporting residential units located in the sea (residential skyscrapers, citadels). These citadels interact with each other on the shoreline, forming a single closed defensive chain that operates both on the surface and underground. Thereby proceeds the mastering of new territories for the human life. More images and architects’ description after the break. read more »

The Areopagus Residence, designed by Paravant Architects in Atenas, , is custom designed to be as intimately connected to the natural landscape around it as possible.  By exploiting passive heating and cooling strategies, the architects were able to design a home that does not require mechanical air conditioning systems. This also allows for uninterrupted south-facing views that open out into the landscape.

Just in time for the warm weather, Visiondivison has shared a great collection of summer houses with us.  Entitled the Spröjs Series, the residences stem from an organizing modular system present in their built project Spröjs House (previously featured on AD).  And, in this collection, in typical Visiondivision fashion, the firm has exploited the potential of the module and crafted residences ranging from a simple shed and cabin to a crazy castle.

Student’s Residence on U.L.E Campus / MACA Estudio + VIRAI Arquitectos

By — Filed under: Educational ,mini ,Residential , , , ,

© VVV agency for architectural visualizations

The project proposal for the Student’s Residence on U.L.E Campus by MACA Estudio + VIRAI Arquitectos is designed as a system rather than a building. Unable to design a solution based on the conditions associated with a given plot, the project offers an independent and isotropic system, with its own “domestic” rules, which does not depend on where it is located and responds the same way to the different physical conditions that can be found. Goksu Rope Factory Lofts / Suyabatmaz Demirel Architects

By — Filed under: Residential , , ,

Suyabatmaz Demirel Architects shared with us their design for the Goksu Rope Factory Lofts in . The new owner of this derelict factory wanted to turn his investment into a high-end residential project consisting of various sized lofts. After visiting the site, our major concern became clear. Since the 17.000m2 building was used many years for industrial production, it should still deliver the authentic atmosphere even after it has been rehabilitated for new functions. In order to keep the intangible precipitation of this place, a subtle and humble design strategy was necessary. More images and architects’ description after the break. read more »
