“It’s incredible to watch the reinvention of the station taking shape into a compelling piece of place-making for . You can already see how the Western Concourse – Europe’s largest single span station structure and the heart of the development – reconnects this much-loved Victorian terminus to its context. It’s immensely satisfying to see the project move forward at such pace and we look forward to celebrating the project’s completion in 2012 for the Olympics.”-John McAslan, Chairman

Bota Bota / Sid Lee Architecture

Uploaded by — Filed under: Featured ,Leisure ,Public Facilities ,Selected , , ,

Sid Lee Architecture was asked to create the architectural designs for Bota Bota, spa-sur-l’eau, a modern twist on the traditional urban spa. This ambitious project, led by the Émond family—also owners of Balnea spa, located in Bromont-sur-le-Lac—is now up and running, following a whirlwind two-year adventure. Located at the foot of rue McGill in the Old Port of , Bota Bota is the new name given to a ferryboat that used to link Sorel and Berthier in the 1950s and that’s been renovated into a floating Scandinavian spa. The boat’s architecture, redesign and visual identity are the fruit of a collaborative effort between Sid Lee Architecture and Sid Lee.

Cultural Centre Ieper / BURO II & ARCHI+I

Uploaded by — Filed under: Cultural ,Featured ,Public Facilities ,Selected , , ,

The new centre for youth and culture right next to the station in Ieper aspires primarily to be an informal meeting place for all ages and nationalities, an objective that pays tribute to the city’s tradition as a tolerant city of peace. The recent disappearance of the cattle market has freed up space for a use which will impart a new momentum to the area, both by day and by night. The programme offers a unique synergy between public and private functions: bringing together a cultural centre (CCI), the youth meeting centre (JOC) and the centre for educational projects and activities (ARGOS).

Minneapolis Riverfront Competition Finalist / StossLU

By — Filed under: Landscape ,Public Facilities , , , ,

Historically, rivers have served as the ecological and commercial backbones of the communities that boarder them. With the deindustrialization of American cities, these lifelines have been unclaimed for civic use. They lay cluttered; remnants of their past serve as barriers to their potential re-use. This proposal by StossLU seeks to claim the Mississippi River and envision its transformation into park space as a spectacle in its own right within the city of .

The city of experienced a huge size and population boom following the industrial development and railway construction of the late 19th century. At this time, horse-drawn cars and trams were the main form of transportation, but soon the horses were not enough to fuel the city’s rapid expansion. As a result, plans were made for development of a new peripheral ring railway that would carry freight throughout the city. Many years later, underground lines for passengers were linked to the original railway. These lines quickly turned the railway into a booming metropolitan transit center, eventually becoming what is today known as the Moscow Metro. More on the development of the Moscow Metro after the break. read more »
