SFJones Architects’ latest inspired creation is the hip new M.B. Post in Manhattan Beach, opening in April 2011. For this upscale eatery, SFJones was asked to design a “soulful space.” A Manhattan Beach resident himself, Jones realized that he could capture the essence of this warm beach community by weaving into the design distinctive local building features such as volleyball posts and lifeguard stations amid reclaimed barn wood, incorporating historical references to the original Manhattan Beach post office with rustic walnut millwork and a faux-painted vintage feature wall.

SHH’s redesigns of the Barbican’s restaurants have won three major design awards in the space of just two weeks. Barbican Foodhall the new ground floor restaurant and deli and Barbican Lounge the first floor bar and restaurant were both named as winners in at the 2011 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, held last week at the East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf, whilst the Barbican Lounge won a further award at the end of June in Monte Carlo at the 2011 International Hotel & Property Awards.

The Café at the Creative Alliance is the last piece of a 10-year redevelopment of the former Patterson Theater into an urban arts center and community anchor. Budget constraints and the challenge of actually fitting a commercial kitchen, bar and dining room into the remaining 1,300 sqf had delayed the build-out of the space for almost a decade and a successful design relied on formal restraint and an opportunistic attitude to all possibilities.

Slated to open at the end of this month Hotel Americano, designed by Enrique Norten of TEN Arquitectos, is the latest building to be added to the Chelsea area. The first project for Mexican boutique brand Grupo Habita in the city, the hotel’s roof top provides a clear view to the newest section (part two) of the impressive High Line. Easily distinguishing itself from its neighbors, the exterior of the 56 room hotel is covered uniquely with yards of chain mail.

Rendering

Construction of Schweger Associated Architects‘ Dubai Pearl is continuing. The groundwork, foundations, basements and lower grounds floors of the four towers which form the central section of Phase 1 of the development is now complete. A total of 3.5 million man hours have so far been spent since work started on site and over 60,000 cubic meter of concrete has been poured on one of the largest construction projects still being developed in the UAE.

The Wanderlust Hotel in Little India, Singapore features a collaboration of designers from Singapore studios including Asylum, phunk Studio and fFurious - together with architect firm DP Architects.  Each level is dedicated to the designs of each firm.  The Lobby is themed as Industrial Glam by Asylum – a juxtaposition of the surrounding’s setting and contemporary design.  Level 2 is Eccentricity by phunk Studio and is designed with bright colors and neon lights on all the surfaces, including a rainbow corridor and mosaic tiled jacuzzi. Level 3 is Is it just Black and White by DP Architects which feature contrasting black and white painted spaces with origami and Pop-Art works on display.  Level 4 is Creature Comforts by fFurious where friendly monsters keep guests company in their rooms.

Ivan Filipovic’s concept for this project revolves around the Adriatic Sea with it thousands of islands, bays and coves, inaccessible lots and the protected natural beauty. Filipovic sees the ideas stemming from NAVIGATING Architecture as the best response to this idyllic setting. A navigable hotel (often popularly called the “Botel” = boat + hotel) offers areal tourist attraction.
